car problems

so the other day im crusin down the highway in my 91 civic cx, then suddenly the engine light came on and the tach kept showing that rpms were droppin to 1000 to 500 then jumping back up to 3000. so i pulled over.....etc, etc....

after doing a compression test which checked out ok i noticed the the cylinder nearest to the driver's side was pumping out quite alot of gas, and there is a loud lifter clickin away. oh ya there was oil in the sparkplug well second one in from the passenger's side

im baffled, what have i done to my car?

Re: car problems

Does it still run? Is it just that the rpms fluctuate all the time? It would really help if you told us the code it was throwing for the check engine light. Lift up you passenger carpet, turn your key to ON and count the number of blinks your ecu lets out. I'm willing to bet its a code 14 for you IAC valve.

Here's more info on what i mean:

Re: car problems

huh after replacing all of the seals and using a stethoscope to listen i found the the core problem was the distributor. the little plastic wheel has worn all to hell and feels loose but i can get it to come off.

so im just wondering how to remove it.

Do you mean the rotor? Sounds like the rotor screw got loose and caused the rotor to get loose. Take out the screw and fit in a new one, this time put loctite on the treads to make sure your rotor is on there tight. BTW this is a common problem.
