Gah! Rich kids are stupid!

So the previous owner of the CRX I bought was a stupid rich kid..... ran the engine until it literally melted.... I had also noticed during my build that the transmission was leaking badly from the axle seals, but I replaced the seals and didn't think much else about that........ until I tried to drive it home yesterday.
Low speeds it's fine... but at higher speeds you can tell the bearings in the differential are FUBAR.
I pulled an axle out this morning just to dip around to see if the fluid was discolored already, and my finger came back with metal shavings on it . oh well.... the engine I bought runs spectacular... should have bought a transmission at the same time though.

Now I've been out of the 4th gen game for many years... are all of the japanese spec transmission like the ZC transmission and require different drive shafts? If so... how was the problem remedied?
Or does anyone know of any re-man places (online or in Texas) where I can pick up a rebuilt Si transmission?

Re: Gah! Rich kids are stupid!

IMO I wouldn't run a ZC tranny. Some people say the you need to use 1g (86-89) teg axles, others say you need 1g teg axles on one side and 2g teg ones on the other side, while others say you can use just 2g axles. Its relatively unclear which axles you should use for a zc tranny in a 4th gen and i've heard numerous horror stories of axles either shattering at the inner boot, or locking up at highway speeds.
I'd say try and find a good si tranny and reuse your axles. These can be pretty hard to find nowadays.

I'd rather not use a ZC transmsission... that's why I was asking if they're all the same... I didn't know if any would be like the US spec trannys.

I'm going to try to find a good used Si tranny... I may know where I can get a DX tranny cheap, and I'll use that if I have to while I have the Si tranny rebuilt... but I'd like to find an already rebuilt tranny.

Buyer beware... if you have an Si transmission, do not buy rebuilt axles from autozone or oriellys or any mass market parts provider.
Si axle drivers side inboard side is a larger diameter than other models axles, and the length the splines go into the transmission are shorter..... so your mass market parts provider are providing one size fits all axles, which don't fit too great... will fit a DX transmission just fine, but not so well on the Si... they will work, but you have to replace your drivers side axle seal with one for a DX transmission and it will just barely seal and probably leak slightly.

Looks like what had happend is the previous owner had replaced the drivers side axle with one of these, and that's why it was leaking so bad... the measurements on the Si axle seal measurements are 40x56x8 (inside diameter, outside diameter, width in mm's), the DX seals measure 35x56x8. 5mm's makes a big difference when it comes to keeping oil in.

I've never heard of people having problems with autozone axles. ALL 4th gen trannies have the same inboard cv joint size, even HF and STD. Thy only difference is the outboard joint size which is smaller on the HF/std models. The inboard spline number and size is all the same. Maybe your tranny seals were on there way out to begin with. FWIW, autozone sells rebuilt OEM axles.

All 4th gen axles will fit... but they're not all the same. I've checked several times with Honda to make sure.
And the only difference is on the drivers size axle... the passenger side are all the same.

When I talk about that fatter area... I mean it has a larger diameter.

You can think I'm crazy if you want... but I'm telling you this from experience. after measuring several different axles and seals.

all the parts providers say they are providing OEM rebuilds, but there are 70% more OEM DX axles than Si's out there. And I even checked a *New* autozone axle (not an OEM rebuild) with the same result.
One size does not fit all perfectly.

According to this dealer's driveshaft order form, all 88-91 civic/crx dx, si, ex, lx Auto or manual shafts have the exact same part number.
http://www.hondapartsdeals.com/image...ive_shafts.pdf

Here's the axle part diagram for an 91 CRX dx:
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...ry5=DRIVESHAFT

And here's the same thing but for a 88 crx si:
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...ry5=DRIVESHAFT

Both show the exact same product numbers for respective R and L axles.

It's been a well known fact that all these axles are interchangeable for many years now.

Re: Gah! Rich kids are stupid!

That's all fine and dandy... but I have seals that are not right, for axles that arent right, and nobody seems to have their shit straight.

I'd always thought everything was interchangable... but now I'm not so sure, and I'd like to know what the damn deal is.

I can make what I have work, but I'd really like to speak to an older Honda master tech, and see if they've seen this before....... oh wait, I work with one.. I'll ask him tomorrow.
