Re: subwoofers
I had my bandpass 10" Lanzars facing the back. I had a bungy cord around it holding it to the rear strut brace so it wouldn't move around. It sounded pretty kickass but then I just removed it all entirely. Note: the added weight will slow your car down from a dig.

Re: subwoofers
I have 1 12 in mine although i dont have a rear strut bar. If i were you i would put it on the left side of your trunk compartment facing the back and close to the strut bar but not touching it. And secure it with either screws or bolts coming up from the "floor" or if you want get some heavy duty velcoe and use that. I did that with mine for a little bit of time and it never budged.
The best box to have would be non ported and on an angle upwards towards the glass. Having a sub face the back of your car will make the tone sound deeper and over sound will be better. Also when you have the sub hitting paralell (sp) to glass it will make the overall sound about 3 db louder. |

Re: subwoofers
subs up ports back or...subs forward ports back will be the loudest...I PROMISE...hundreds of hours of testing in SPL in CRX's...

Re: subwoofers
I also have an 89 hatch with 2 12 in subs. Now i compete and i have them facing foward (towards the seats) and it sounds excellent, my box is alost ported on both sides so it depends on what kind of box you have.
So i would say face them foward depending on how much watts you have running to them. I tried facing mine towards the back window and it blew my hatch off lol!(not kidding) |

Re: subwoofers
From my experience in all the cars I've designed stereos for and built stereos in the rule of thumb is to face the subs towards the back of the car, in a hatch like yours you also have the option of facing the subs straight up as long as they are as far back as possible. Most of the time facing the subs forward will actually cause some cancelation and/or muffling because you have them facing into a seat. If you do insist on facing them forward the only way to get the best sound out of them is the seal off the back of the car behind them so sound doesn't leak back there - in your hatch this probably wouldn't be the best idea. If I where you I'd design a box that would face the subs up and if you are doing ports face them up as well.

Re: subwoofers
Lol, I did notice a little bit of difference in acceleration when I removed my 12's..but I will say, the car handled better.

Re: subwoofers
Ya, you'll be fine that way - are you going just ported or bandpass?? I'd recommend ported, but make sure you tune it right or it'll sound like ass. I prefer sealed myself - takes a little more power to get the really loud bass, but it sounds better and it's way more forgiving on the boxes and much much easier to tune. Plus it also plays a larger range or frequencies more accurately than bandpass or ported.

Re: subwoofers
As I have said in another thread. If your at a competition, drop the seat and face them forward, you will get a couple dB out of it, but cruising around, face them toward the rear glass. Im also a fan of sealed boxes. I didn't notice that big of a difference weight wise when I removed mine, but it was just some single voice coil JLs and the box didn't weigh much, and I had just a 120 watt amp hooked up to it. With it cranked all the way up, I pushed the little amp a little too far, so it would cut out, but I could get it up to 141 dB.
