tranny issues

I have a 1985 mustang 5.0, I'm having problems with shifting from 2nd to 3rd is there any info out there that might covince me that it could be the torque converter, or is ther anyone that can tell me if its easy enough to rebuild the transmission myself?

Re: tranny issues

Guess its a auto? Why would you think its the converter? Is the trans slipping? Or it just wont physically shift into 3rd? Is this a new problem? Need alot more info man. It could be anything, shifter, cable, tranny itself (which would take out the converter), ect. Hard to tell with such vague info.

When did the problem start?
Does it do it all the time?
What if you shift it manually?
Can you shift from 2-3 then 3-2 then 2-3 again and have it go into 3rd? Could be a sticking valve.
Why do you think its the coverter?
Does the trans slip or just not shift into 3rd?

If you could answere some of these questions it would help us help you.

Talking Re: tranny issues

AOD trans are bad about killing the clutches.. I had an 87 with an AOD and had same issue. Took the pan off and sure enough had clutch material in it. Rebuilt it from bellhousing to tailshaft. no more issues

Re: tranny issues

When my C4 dies I may put a AOD in my car. I'd like the OD on the highway. But it wont be cheap building an AoD to take the power lol. They are bad about burning up. Any overdrive tranny is in my opinion. People leave them in overdrive everywhere they go and rolling hills at 45mph or so will absolutely destroy a trans after a while. It just shifts up and down the whole time.

Re: tranny issues

David,
Dont they (AOD) rob a lot more power than the C4?
