inaccurate gas guage readings

I have a 98 jeep wrangler 4 cyl and for the last few months I have been watching the gas guage and realizing that when the guage reads empty and I go to fill up it still has 5 gallons of gas left in the tank. It is really annoying because I am never sure how much gas I have left in the tank. Any suggestions on the problem or a fix?

Thanks to all who reply.

Re: inacurate gas guage readings

Sounds like the sending unit in the tank isn't reporting the correct amount. Nice safety feature actually.

Do you have the light that comes on indicating close to empty? It's supposed to come on when there's 2-3 gallons remaining, and might be something you can rely on.

My 97 came on almost exactly when I had 3 gallons remaining.

Re: inacurate gas guage readings

So is there a way of fixing the problem without having to remove the gas tank?

Re: inaccurate gas guage readings

I do and just look more at my odometer readings and when i get about 220 miles on it a go gas up..

But you would think that the JEEP company would have taken something like this into consideration for fixing.

Happy Jeepin
