96 Jimmy 4x4 problems

I have a 96 GMC Jimmy 4x4, 4-door. When I put the car in neutral and push the 4x4 button it will flash and light up but no 4x4. I hear some click in the front end like its trying to engage the 4x4 but nothing? Any help? Thanks

Re: 96 Jimmy 4x4 problems

I have the same problem in my 96 Blazer. . . Here's what you do. Take it somewhere and have a mechanic take a look at it, they'll usually charge you something like $40 to look at it and tell you what's wrong with it. I've had this problem since I bought the Blazer a little under 2 years ago, and I've replaced about $300 in parts for the 4WD, and it still doesn't work. I think it's the front transfer case or the hubs themselves. If you want to be sure it works, there is a kit you can buy that will convert the pushbutton 4x4 to a pull handle, and you can replace the stock electronic hubs with manual locking hubs, that's what I'd do, it would probably last longer that way too. I'm not sure what the problem you are experiencing is, but be sure to let us all know when you find out!

You can pull transfer case codes by grounding pin 13 on that one.
Click in front axle or front end is pointing to front axle not engaging good.
It takes vacuum from transfer case switch and a vacuum actuator and a cable and a electric/vacuum switch to lock it in.
First check for good vacuum to it.
Here is a couple of good links and also search around on here there is a rash of 4W problems.

Seems like great advice. May I also suggest ditching the vaccuum diaphragm, you can replace that with a more reliable pull-cable kit from one of our sponsors here for relatively cheap. I've got plenty of vaccuum in mine to engage the front axle, but the vaccuum has actually ripped through the rubber on the vaccuum diaphragm twice already. Let us know what you figure out!
