Would a 2.8 with a bad oil seal around the distrib

Would a 2.8 with a bad oil seal around the distributor pour oil out the backside of the motor. Or is it most likely the intake? My 84 S-10 pours oil from the back top passanger side of the motor. Going to pull dist and see if I can tell where it is coming from. it is from that area, just dont know if it is intake gasket or dist. gasket.

Its both, my luck. But mostly the intake gasket.

Mine stopped slow leak when i switched from reg oil to full synthetic and wynn's stop engine leak.

I replaced the intake gasket today as well the dist gasket. I am doing the MMO soak now. Tomorrow after work I will change oil and see how bad it leaks oil. Hopefully it wont

Here's something else to consider....

The valve covers, or more specifically, the old RTV sealant used at the factory. During the '84-'85 model year, GM used RTV silicone sealant for a lot of the joints normally sealed with a gasket. I have an '85 S10 with the 2.8L and it would leak oil....from initial looks it appeared as if it was the rear main seal (a weak spot on some of the earlier engines). I traced the wet trail of oil up to the rear of the cylinder heads....to the back end of the valve covers (nearest the firewall where it's real hard to see). A quick trip to NAPA for some real cork valve cover gaskets and a weekend spent doing the deed resulted in no more leaking. If you've got the original RTV sealant on you valve covers, the 22 year old stuff has petrified and no amount of torquing down the covers will fix it.

Mine has the RTV sealant sealing the valve covers, I'm putting some real gaskets on today. I'm hoping this will stop my leak.

I seem to remember that the 2.8 had an o-ring on the distributor shaft. Below the o-ring was oil under pressure from the pump and it would leak excessively when the o-ring went bad.

I replaced the valve cover gaskets yesterday, seems to be doing fine. I will have to keep an eye on it for the next few days. You damn near have to take the engine apart to get the valve covers off.

Also, I have been informed from a Chevy Dealer mechanic, that these 2.8's have flaw of not getting enough oil to rear main bearing, so best to keep oil level about half inch above full mark which he said helps.

The new valve cover gaskets seam to have done the trick. I haven't been smelling oil burning off the exhaust and my oil level has been staying on the full mark.

Hey I've got and (2.8 V.6) and i had the same problem. And, I replaced the seal and the O-ring on the Distrib and still poured oil out. So, I replaced the intake gasket and the Heads and it stop!!
