For those that run Mobil 1 oil...

I am not going to run their oil anymore.

Not because it is 'bad' oil, but because it is grossly overpriced now.

Mobil 1 was introduced in 1974. In 2002 Mobil B1 introduced "supersyn" anti-wear technology, followed by Mobil 1 Extended Performance in 2005 which increased the use of this technology further.
Controversy
In 2006, the results of a gas chromatography test on Mobil 1 EP 5w-30 were posted by an industry expert on the popular motor oil discussion website BITOG. It showed the oil to be primarily composed of a less expensive, Group III hydroprocessed mineral oil. Until this time, Mobil 1 was believed to be a true synthetic, utilizing a Group IV (PAO) basestock. The release of this information has led to a backlash against ExxonMobil's lubricant products in many automotive communities. Ironically, in 1999, Mobil fought Castrol's change in formulation to a Group III basestock in motor oils being marketed as fully synthetic. Mobil claimed that Castrol was decieving their customer base, while degrading their products. The National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus eventually ruled that Castrol could continue to market their Syntec line as a fully synthetic motor oil. ExxonMobil currently refuses to comment on the primary basestock of their Mobil 1 series of oils.

I am going to start using either Pennzoil Platinum or VP synthetics.

Re: For those that run Mobil 1 oil...

Nothing wrong with Royal Purple.

Other than price.
Been shown to be very similiar to the VP oils I ordered, and Pennzoil Platinum.

Re: For those that run Mobil 1 oil...

So basically Mobile 1 synthetic isnt really synthetic?
I read over it but I didnt know there where grade I II and III of synthetic oils!
So is Royal Purple more synthetic then Mobile 1 and is Motul more synthetic then Royal Purple?

Ohhhhh, my aching head!

Re: For those that run Mobil 1 oil...

Something like that.

Basestock I, II, III aren't fully synthetic. Although apparently they are allowed to call a basestock III a synthetic.
IV and V are fully synthetic.
At least that is how I understand it.

Mobil 1 is still a fine motor oil. Just not worth the price we have to pay for it.

Re: For those that run Mobil 1 oil...

I use royal purple, it's not too expensive, cheaper than mobile 1. The Purple does the job and it makes the cars run nicely. I've tried Motul in the Jetta and didnt like it much, the oil seemed too thin for my liking.

I use Castrol Syntec german blend in my ss and the Castrol synthetic blend in my truck. I've had zero problems out of the truck burning oil in 8 years and 155,000 miles......and I'm by no means easy on the truck.

Ahh but your mileage is skewed... 155,000 on the chassis, but not on the motor.
