02 Grand Prix Gas gage
I have an 02 Grand prix with 150k on it. I try to do all the maintance work myself put this has me a little tiwsted. My gas gage is reading wrong, if I start up and I'm low on gas it will give me a warning. But the minute I start driving the gas gage will go up to 3/4 full and slow drop back down. But it never seems to give me an accurate reading after I start driving. Any ideas on what could be cuasing this?
Let me know, Thanks lutch |

Re: 02 Grand Prix Gas gage
The problem is the fuel level float in the tank. If you're having no driveability issues, then it can be replaced by itself. It also comes as part of the fuel pump module assembly if you're having fuel pressure problems as well. The AC-Delco part number is SK1051 (GM dealer part #89060197) and is the same for all engines/trim levels. If you need the fuel pump assembly, the GTP (3800 supercharged) uses an MU1075 (GM #25344968) and the SE/GT models use an MU177 (GM#25331861) for either the 3100 or 3800. There is an access door in the trunk so you don't have to drop the tank. It is in the center (side to side) of the trunk near the pass through opening in the rear seat-back and is held in by 7 fasteners.

Thanks, richtazz
If i get what your saying I'll need to replace the fuel pump, right? It doesn't sound like it is that hard of a job, is there a way to fix it without replacing the entire pump or would it just make sense to do the whole thing? |

Re: 02 Grand Prix Gas gage
Yes, you can replace just the fuel level sensor without changing the entire fuel pump assembly. I gave you both sets of prices and part numbers in case you had other issues other than the fuel guage reading. If you're planning on keeping the car, and have a habit of running it below a quarter tank on a regular basis, you may be better off replacing the entire fuel pump assembly.
