94 Bonneville runs rough, No power, won't rev

Hi all,
I have a 94 Bonneville with the 3800 motor. 175,000 mi. (I’ve owned it for almost 100,000 of those) the car has been running rough for the last couple of months. It hesitates when I step on the accelerator from a stop, and really cuts out when accelerating in traffic. I added some Techron to the gas (again) to see if maybe the injectors were dirty and it seemed to help some. For a while. This morning, as I drove off, it seemed like I was pulling a tank behind me! Absolutely no power. As long as I take off very gently, it will run ok, but if I give it some gas, it coughs and acts like it's going to stall. After I got up some speed, I tried to hit passing gear and although the tyranny shifted down, there was no acceleration. Just some coughing. I got home, let it rest while, and then tried to start it by just turning the key, (normally this works). It would just crank over. I gave it some gas and it finally started, ran like it was choked for a few seconds then smoothed out. When I tried to gun the engine, it coughs and acts like it would stall, soon as I let up, it idles ok again. ... Some other things... In hind sight, this has been going on for about a year, (on a much milder scale). Adding Techron would always smooth things out for a month or two, but that hesitation when accelerating never would go away completely. Also, the check engine light will come on once in a while, but never stays lit long.
Can anyone give me some ideas on where to start looking? Thanks!

Welcome to AF!!

Try unhooking the cat. This seems like you have a blockage that is preventing the exhaust gasses from escaping thus preventing the engine from reving. If you find that the cat is not blocked then check the throttle position sensor. I recommend you find a manual on your car as it will give you directions on how to test the TPS and what the correct values should be.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check those things and let you know... Someone else suggested that I might be starving for fuel because of a clogged fuel filter, especially since I haven't changed it in over 100,000mi., so I'll take a look at that also... Thanks again!

Re: 94 Bonneville runs rough, No power, won't rev

Well, I replaced the fuel filter since that was the easiest thing on the list, and that did not fix the problem. When I relieved the fuel pressure before changing, there almost wasn't any. Only about 1/4 tsp squirted out. Is this normal? From what the manual said, seems like there should have been much more. I had started it just minutes before to pull it in the drive, so it did not have a chance to bleed down.
Another thing I just noticed. The buzzing sound I usually hear when I turn on the key (fuel pump pressuring up?) is not there any more. totally absent, and it is still very hard to start. Does this sound like fuel pump problems?

Thanks again!

Check the fuel pressure at the rail, this will eliminate the ongoing guess work.

Follow up...
I checked the cat and it was clean... checked the fuel pressure and it was almost non existant. Conferred with a local shop and they advised I change out the fuel pump.
I just got done, and the car runs like it's old self. Lots of power and revs fine.

By the way, there was no access to the fuel tank, it had to be removed to complete the job!

...Great engineering GM!!!

I'd like to thank GTP_Dad and Maxwedge for all the help!

Dan

Thanks, good deal, basic diagnostics can save a lot of time and money these days.

Ignition Control Module....My Bonneville was doing that as well...After replacing almost everything ( which it had all original parts anyway), that was the culprit..
