CV Axle
What else besides clunking can be a sign of cv joints going bad? My 96 makes a clunk every time it goes into gear and usually when I hit the gas at a stop sign, it also makes a grinding noise while turning either direction. The noise comes from the left side. Also, it doesn't clunk while doing the "turn a circle in reverse" test.

Re: CV Axle
Outers usually clatter in a clickity clack fashion when turned tightly, inners usually rumble when they go bad, which they rarely do.
I think I'd put the hood up and brake torque it in gear, see if the motor is flipping up off a broken mount...fore and aft roll (slight) is normal, the restrictors on top control that and you can see if they're broke just by looking, but if the motor "crawls" diagonally or lifts one end more than the other under torque, something broke... Try it in both drive and reverse, so you don't miss anything.
