1992 Grand Prix Idoling problem

I have a 1992 Grand Prix with a 3.4 V6. The car has 70k miles and is currently garaged and not driven. I occassionally start it (5-8 times per year). The car runs very well with the exception of start up. No matter if it is warm or cold out side when I first start the car, the engine really revs 3000-3500 rpms for a few minutes. The check engine light comes on occassionally as well. After the car runs at that of high of RPMs for about 5 or so minutes, the check engine light goes off and the car runs perfect <2000 rpms at idol. Im guessing there is some sort of idoling sensor that is gone bad or just simply needs cleaning. I do not have insurance on the car and it is not currently registered therefore I can not legally drive it to a garage. Can some one give me an idea of the problem and maybe something I can pick up at a junk yard or an auto parts store that can help my car idol better at start up.

Thanks

well i wouldnt say its running perfect with a 2000 RPM idol. maybe a TPS(throttle position sensor) theres also a way to adjust ur idling speed. im not sure how but i know you can because ive thought about doing it to mine

Re: 1992 Grand Prix Idoling problem

it should be idleing at about 750. you can retrieve the check engine codes by jumpering the two upper right pins on the connector under the dash and then turn the key to the run position. the check engine light will flash to tell you the codes. it starts with one long flash and two short flashs that means 12, the start of file and end of file. it will flash that 3 times then start flahing any stored codes then flash a 12 again 3 times at the end of file.
