22r won't heat

Hope someone can help, there are gaps in what I can tell you about this motor. The pickup is an 83, but the motor was changed so I don't know what year it is or how many miles, but it is a 22r.

The motor won't heat, thermostat was changed but still the motor only gets warm, but not hot.

Mileage is very bad around 13 mpg.

Some blue or black exhaust from exhaust

The pickup was purchased for a project car for my son, but I would like to have advice on where to start. It does run and drive fine, except for the above problems, for the price I couldn't turn it down.

What temp thermostat are you using? Have you done a compression check on the motor? How old is the water pump? Is the coolant circulating? How are you measuring the engine temp? Is the thermostat good? Is the carb functioning properly? Black smoke is idicative of running rich. What do the spark plugs look like? Is there gas in the oil?

Hey all good questions. Thermostat is 190. No compression check. Water pump and cool circulating??? The termostat is good.

Need a few more answers, you stopped before you got to the end of the list. Are you going by the factory temp gauge? Have you pulled the plugs and if so what brand and number? How's the carb working? The blue smoke means oil burning!!

When you say "won't heat" do you mean engine doesn't come up to operating temp or no heat from heater?

If it's the engine, your lack of temp may be causing the black smoke (running rich) and low MPG. Coolant flows through the intake manifold and there are some temp sensors there. Can't remember all the details offhand but something to think about.

Doubt it's a water pump problem, if they don't flow enough coolant you'd have the opposite problem (overheating).

How do you know the thermostat is good? 190 degree thermostat should allow the motor to get warm if it is not stuck open. To test the thermostat, place in a pan of water on the stove and turn on the burner. Measure the temperature of the water when the thermostat opens.

The way I am checking the temp is simple, the termperature gauge (which could be wrong) and touching the radiator. The radiator is warm but not hot to the touch. I would expect the radiator to be hot. The thermostat is new so I would expect that to work.

New and working are two different things. Ihave seen many new thermostats that didn't work properly. If the thermostat was working it wouldn't open until the coolant reached 190 degrees so the coolant could circulate freely. Aftermarket or Toyota thermostat??
