1981 yamaha virago 920rh

I bought this bike at the begining of this last summer. the bike was well maintained buy the owner. Resently it wouldn't start. It will crank and crank, but nothin'. what is funny was that if was running bueatifully just a few weeks ago and then it would not start. if i ride her i usually at least start her up for 5min or so, once a week. the weather has been a pretty cold low 40 degree F, i don't know if that has anything to do with it. so i have tried starter fluid in the carbs and not even sputter. something that worried me was when i took off the airfilter i found a little bit of oil in the air box. i wonder if this is normal for this bike or if i should be worried.
some background: first bike, somewhat machinical with engines
any tip on how to get an old bike going again, much appriciated
thanks

you need to find out if you're getting spark. Try pulling a plug and laying it on the head while turning it over and watching for spark. If you're not getting spark, your CDI box may have failed. They go out like a fuse, one minute they're fine, the next nothing with no warning. I'm not sure if a local dealer/repair shop can test them or not.
