96 tahoe tranny problems
96 4wd tahoe. okay, i was backing up today up a hill going pretty quickly. come to an "almost" complete stop and threw it into drive. it made some weird , expensive to fix type sound when it engaged and now when i'm driving in the lowest gear it sounds weird. almost like a grinding sound. when it switches to second, everything in the world is in harmony. any suggestions about what might have happened to my money pit, i mean, tahoe?

Re: 96 tahoe tranny problems
Does reverse still work? If not, then it is the sunshell which requires a rebuild.

Re: 96 tahoe tranny problems
Well I bet...when u first take off the sound was like metal grinding...but when the gear change it quiet out...if so...its your lower planatary gear..I have an 96 tahoe..and dat was my problem and i have an cousin who had the same problem!!!! the part cost only $70... but the catch is you got to take every thing out the tranny because thats da last gear in the tranny...the whole job is only like 2 hours at the most!!! but the shop will probably take 2-3 days to make it look good!!! but the only labor is remembering where every thing goes...its 106 parts in a 4l60E...but if u go to the parts store and buy the $20 book, its real easy...it break it down step by step...but the smart way to do it...take all parts out in section not individual...and if your trucks start jerking it only the strainer is stopped up...so..to tell you the truth...when the shop say they overhaul ur tranny they are only fixin the problem...because hardly ever the clutches go bad....but thats how they get paid their $1000-$1800 cause nobody knows better!!! Now I know I'll never take my tranny to a shop again!!!! its also best to replace your strainer & gasket($20) Torkeconverter($100-$200) and external cooler($40-$50)

I'd pay money to watch someone remove the driveshafts, transfer case, exhaust, transmission, properly repair the transmission, flush the lines and torque converter of metal-contaminated oil, and assemble it all again in two hours.
