95 Voyager lifters making alot of noise!

Man I have been neglecting my voyager. This has been a really stupid move on my part. Since the summer I have really been putting on the miles. I'm usually pretty good about changing oil and tune-ups. But not latley! So I think I really stepped in it on this one! The lifters started ticking a bit. I checked the oil and I was a bit low. I have had a really busy schedule lately so I told the wife to have my teen age 16 step son add some oil. Well I thought to myself he really like tinkering with cars with his biological father so he should do ok. (2nd mistake) So I never went back to check on the oil. He added oil alright (over filled)

outside of changing oil I have no clue about auto care. I think by admitting this I can atleast have a good starting point. Now it seems the noise seems to be getting alot louder. So is this something I will have to take to a pro or do you think this is something I can address? what do you think? I'm a real novice so no flames please. Thanks in advance

The first thing I would do is go in and get an oil change and see how it does. It is possible it was so full that it was foaming due to the crank churning the oil. If it does that, it can cause poor oil flow throughout the engine, I would have thought in that case, the oil light would have been on. Did he put the fluids in the right places? When you mention lifters, is it all of them or just one or two?

I would use Marvel Mystery Oil as it will free up sticking lifters. Change the oil and filter but substitute the MMO for 1 qt of oil. Change again after about 5K miles. You can keep adding MMO. It's very cost effective. Some peeps recommend Sea-foam, Auto RX, Regane and other cleaners. I've been using MMO for 20 years in both gas tank and oil sump. All my engines are clean inside including piston tops.

He did put the oil in the correct place. It has just been over filled. I will give the Marvel Mystery oil a try! Thanks for the advice I will let you know!

Overfilling by up to a quart probably won't hurt. Auto-crossers do that routinely and don't have problems. I always overfill by a quart on engines that are leaking oil, until I can stop the leak. So...although sloppy work, not as harmful as might be thought.

MMO is proven on sticking lifters and general engine sludge. It may take a few hundred miles of driving, but it usually will free them right up.

As always, good luck with your project!
