A Chevy newb with some questions.
I'm really considering a '96 Impala SS, but first I have some questions.
(This probably should have went into the Impala forum, but I figured there would be more engine-related knowledge floating around here, opposed to all the idiotic "rollin on 24's" crap.) 1. What is the difference between the LS1 and the LT1? 2. Can LS1 parts fit on the LT1? 3. While browsing through a Summit catalog, I saw alot of parts that said they were compatible with the Camaro/Firebird LT1. Would these parts (aside from the obvious like exhaust and intakes) fit on the Impala's LT1? Thanks everybody, and remember, I'M NEW....so go easy on me. |

Re: A Chevy newb with some questions.
LS1 parts will not fit on an LT1. The LT1's in the impala are the same as the f-bodys except for cylinder heads, and exhaust (i think).
LT1 is a gen 2 block with reverse flow cooling that was used from 92-97. LS1 is a gen 3 block that shares nothing with the LT1 execpt its still a push rod v8. this engine was used from 97 to 04. if you wanna know anything more specific just ask

Re: A Chevy newb with some questions.
You made the right choice in comming here with the questions. They will be promtly awnsered at least 3 times each in more detain than what you need, all with entertaining jokes and off topic ramblings.
1) The LS1 is aluminum (vs. the iron block LT1) and makes more power, especially at high rpms. 2) I think a few basic parts might be compatable, but for the most part no. 3) Engine parts are engine parts, be it for an Impalla, Camaro, Trans Am, or Vette, or whatever else they put the LT1s into. If you have a specific part in question, just ask and we can help. Those are the basics, hope it was helpful. |

Also, does anyone know if an ECU power-programmer for a Camaro/Firebird LT1 would work with the Impala? Thanks for answering my questions so quickly! You guys have been a big help!

Since I can't quite afford the fully restored 1970 Chevelle SS 454, I'll gladly take the Impala as an alternative.

Re: A Chevy newb with some questions.
with twin 67mm turbo it'll give you over 1,000bhp at the wheels.

Re: A Chevy newb with some questions.
with a few boltons (intake, tb, tb foil, 1LE elbow, headers, high flow cat, catback, underdrive pulleys, PCM tune), you can achieve that goal quite easily. there are also some free mods u can do.

If you think it would be a better idea to go with the shorties, what brand would you reconmmend? If I go with the shorty setup, I'd be pretty set on the Magnaflow high-flow cats and the Borla exhaust system.

Re: A Chevy newb with some questions.
long tubes are usually net you more low end torque. i dont think the headers with borla exhaust would be considered too loud. the this about borla is that the system should be adjustable with plates on the muffler. one of the plates allows you to totally bypass the muffler, which would make it a more radical sound. the cheapest header would be the pacesetter long tubes. the borla system will not be cheap because it is adjustable and it is totally made of stainless steal. magnaflow or flowmaster are good also.

Well it turns out that those Hooker long-tubes are actually shorties. My only option for long-tubes are these Heddman hedders. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Could anybody tell me if they would mate-up directly to the factory exhaust (by bypassing the cats altogether)?

Re: A Chevy newb with some questions.
most headers will run around there too but the cheapest are the pacesetter Long Tubes.

Re: A Chevy newb with some questions.
Pacesetter only has headers available for the Camaro/Firebird LT1. Even though it's the same engine, the Impala's exhaust might run differently. Even though the Heddman hedders are $450/pair, it would be a worthy investment.
