1997 CD Changer E1

I just recently purchased a 1997 Conti, and went to use the CD Changer but to no avail. When I put the CD in, regardless of which slot I use, I hear the motor cycle through the empty slots until it reaches the one I inserted the CD into. Then it quickly prompts me on the stereo dash of an E1, which is a mechanism error. Does anyone know exactly what this is, and if I can diagnose it myself? And does anyone happen to know if a 97 Conti (w/the luxury audio system, 6CD chnger, etc) has a stock subwoofer and amp in the back? THANKS!!

Re: 1997 CD Changer E1

I dont have my manual handy so i cant lookup the code....i think towncar has them...but anyway.if you made the cd in mp3 format it will not play.it has to be in wave format to play in that changer...if thats not it look at the white sleeves in the box make sure none of the tips of them are bent over and they are perfectly streight..one on mine was bent and would not recogbnize that slot was even there.

There are no specific instructions for diagnosis & repair on any of these error codes. On mine, I had to take it to a shop that basically just cleaned the mechanics and lazer; it's been working fine since...

Compact Disc Player, Digital Audio

Note:
The digital audio compact disc player (18D806) has heat-protection circuitry to protect the laser diode. If the temperature of the digital audio compact disc player reaches 75°C (167°F), the heat detection circuit will shut off the digital audio compact disc player. When the temperature is within normal operating range, the digital audio compact disc player will again be operational.

Error Messages

The luxury analog cassette/digital audio compact disc player control chassis is designed to diagnose and display the following conditions:

l CD E1 -- Compact disc player mechanism error (system default)

l CD E2 -- Focus error

l BAD CD -- Disc(s) unreadable

l TOO HOT -- The disc mechanism has stopped playing due to over temperature

l NO CD -- Disc magazine not loaded in digital audio compact disc player

l NO DJ -- Digital audio compact disc player not connected or not communicating with control chassis.
