Want to see what happens when you put a blower on stock cast pistons?

SHOW ME POTATO SALAD!

This is exactly the reason why they say don't put a blower on a high mileage engine, you're going to blow a headgasket or burn up the pistons.

That wasn't the case with my truck (14,000 miles) however, my mistake was running the truck too lean (13.3 afr). Was only on it for about 2-3 seconds, but apparantly that was enough to blow a head gasket and annihilate pistons 1 and 3. Part of this was my fault for running the truck to lean, but a lot of it had to do with this dumbass "Supercharger/Turbo specialist" place I went to for a tune. They end blowing a spark plug while messing with it and basically "tune" it on 5 cylinders. Technically it was adjusted around 11.5 WOT with their tune, but when I fixed the spark plug problem this threw the whole air/fuel ratio off and instead of 11.5 WOT it was mid-13's. Anyways I'm having the engine completely rebuilt forged by my machinest this winter, it should be ready to race in the summer.

So here the truck sits, soul-less and empty.

Didn't really sound like much of anything. Scanner brought up there was a misfire in cylinders 1 and 3, and you could hear the truck hesitating. It still drove...just not very well.

That is actually a common problem on late model 5.0 and 5.7L vortec truck engines... Ever hear one rattle when started cold, almost sounds like a lifter, its the skirt and ring lands on the pistons falling apart..
Either way they sure don't build them like they used to...

bummer, but 9 times out of 10 is isnt the blowers fault, its the tune. Good luck

After looking at s10forums.com, I've noticed pistons 1 and 3 are a major weakpoint on this V6. A ton of people have had misfire problems on these engines lately and most of them come down to 1 and 3. It seems if something major is going to break on these engines, those are usually the first to go.

You're definately right about that. Even so, how long would this setup of really lasted me on the stock engine? I imagine I would of raced it a few times here and there, and when I reach 30-40k miles it ends up burning up the pistons or breaking something else. It's pretty apparant to me now either go with forged internals or don't go forced induction at all.

Again, you really should be thinking at beefing up your engine before you do so. This is a pretty clear cut case of what can happen if the tune is off just a little bit. If you blow something up on accident, you looking at a lot of down time on your Sentra, and a lot of headaches trying to find out whats wrong. I hope you have another car to drive as a backup.

Re: Want to see what happens when you put a blower on stock cast pistons?

Yeah that better not happen to mine or I will be severely pissed off. I'm only doing about 10 psi on the supercharger, so nothing too crazy. If something really bad happens, like the engine block cracks, I'm ditching this forced induction crap and just putting in a V8.

Re: Want to see what happens when you put a blower on stock cast pistons?

Sucks man, sorry to hear it's down. Good luck getting it up and running again. What was your CR 9:1? Are you sticking with that in the rebuild? 10psi with a semi-decent tune should be fine on that.

Stock compression is 9.2:1, and yeah I'm going to keep it around that. Maybe a a little bit less.
