Whinning/rattleing in 97 country 4wd 4.0

first i want to thank MT-2500 for the answer for my last prob. turned out it was just the amount of fuel pressure and fixed it. Now my new prob. is a whinning and sort of rattleing sound coming from under my hood when i accelerate even when im in neutral so i think i can rule out tranny prob. I thought it was my belt at first but its nice and tight doesnt slip, then i thought it was the sorry dont know what theyre called the things the belt goes around thought 1 of them was loose but they were all on there tight, so i ran out of ideas of what it can be. So i figure ask the experts here, so if n e 1 has a clue on wat it is please help me out.
Thanks guys,
Seamus

Cool Re: Whinning/rattleing in 97 country 4wd 4.0

Need more information....does it sound like a bearing noise or say a cracked exhasut header (which kinda of rattles and is low down on the left hand side of engine area)?

Can you tell if it is right or left (driver or passenger side)?

I dont kno wat theyre called but the thing the belt goes over and under to turn the a/c and the alternator i thought one of them was loose but i checked them all and theyre all not wobbeling so i dont think its that.

Let me suggest that you look at the idler pulley and tensioner system (do you know how to loosen and retension that?).

Then, check the fluid level of the power steering pump (driver's side top).

If fact...detension the above mentioned idler pulley a slight amount (say about 2 or three complete turns) and run for minute or so and see if the noise changes. Make sure you loosen the 15mm nut in front (by the electric fan) before loosening the screw (which is vertical) behind the belt.

Also make sure the clutch fan (pass side) is not locked up (should spin by hand).

The belt system, btw, is called a serpentine belt.

yep..I just changed the H2O pump in my 97 about 3 months ago. Make sure you pull the coolant sensor from thermostat housing when you refill to bleed all the air out.
