Unhappy Starting problems

1989 cherokee, 4.0L, auto., son's jeep.

My son is having an intermittent starting problem. When he turns the key, the starter will not turn over. Sometimes it works right and starts and other times it doesn't. I suspect it to be the starter relay or NSS. This weekend I checked for continuity between pins B & C on the NSS connector. It tested out good about half the time. I also bypassed the starter relay with a remote switch and it started. What do you guys think? Is it the NSS?

Mike

Re: Starting problems

Here is a write up on the NSS....be advised IF it gets screwed up they ain't cheap to replace
http://jeepin.com/features/nss/index.asp
These are the things that will maybe cause the problem:
Starter...Starter and solinoid are 1 most parts stores can usually check them while they are on the vehicle..

Battery...and cables...Easy Fix...$$$ will depend on what YOU want as far as CCA Get a good one with a good warranty

Alternator....Fairly easy fix...$$$ Make sure you get the right one for you specific vehicle and go for the LIFETIME WARRANTY

Ignition switch...Mounted on top of the steering column behind the instrument cluster...PITA to get to...but if it don't work you don't start..$$$ bout maybe $10.00

Keyed cylinder..works with and operates the above mentioned ignition switch
Get a haynes manual.....gives a step by step on how to R n R

NSS...This is not the cheapest route to go,to replace the unit ...you lookin at maybe $200 or maybe more....So make sure IT IS the NSS before youpull it out..

Autozone NSS=1989 JEEP CHEROKEE 4WD
With automatic transmission (Change)

WELLS CR417 $229.99

BTW, even though I testing it several times, it turned out to be the starter. Replaced it and it is back on the road. WOOHOO!

Re: Starting problems

Thought I'd throw this in....my 89'XJ...sittin in a Wal Mart parkin lot....turn key.....NADA....had a guy ask me if I needed a jump.....hooked up cables...waited a few....turn key NADA....Call daughter....she shows up..get ready to pull starter,battery,alternator....Then the brain ccells kick in....have daughter turn key....you listen....slide under...she turns key....the bolts on the starter had backed off enough tha when the solinoid kicked in the starter itself would back away from the flywheel enough that the gears would not mesh....So pulled starter, took it to AutoZone....I love lifetime warrantys..got me 3 lock washers.....and VIOLAAAAA...problem fixed...Have read several posts on other forums to the same effect.....So I'm just spreadin the word.....Check them bolts and invest maybe $1.00 for an easy fix
