93 bravada starter problems ?

I'm in Florida the cars is in cincinnati with our two sons. 93 bravada 4.3 smarttrac about 136,000.this past saturday wouldn't start without jump. took to sams club ( where son works) cleaned corosion off of positive cable, replaced battery (wouldn't take charge). starting ok but volt gauge not going above about 10.(also several times during the previous week when trying to start would just click, after several clicks would finally start.) ok after new battery took to Pep boys, they said alt bad. they replaced it for $200. now still clicking int. took back to P.B. said starter going-$275- they supposedly checked all connections. sorry so winded. any suggestions???

Cool Re: 93 bravada starter problems ?

Well, sometimes that's how it goes Daddy-O.
To be serious, a bad battery has a short and it will kill your alternator because it's full chat trying to charge up this dead battery everytime the motor starts. Same goes for the starter. Lower voltage creates a high amperage draw and associated heat. The longer one of the brushes stays on one commutater bar (the copper bars on the end of the starter armature), the more heat is generated.
If one of my starters "grunts" one time, I'm checking the alternator and battery cables that day and if the they are good, the battery just gets replaced.

Re: 93 bravada starter problems ?

Hi Chris, thanks for the info, but the starter doesn't grunt there is just a click, like a dead battery or a dirty/loose connection. Doesn't anybody "fix" or repair anything anymore instead of replace. The alt probably just needed brushes and the starter is most likely a worn spot on the solenoid. I guess what I'm really asking for is $200 for an alt and $275 for a starter reasonable and does anyone who lives in that area know of some place else to go to. I can do those myself a lot cheaper and it just kills me to pay that much

Re: 93 bravada starter problems ?

To find a place that rebuilds alternators & starters is getting more difficult these days. To find a place who sells the parts to do the rebuilds is even more difficult.
Another thing is the costs of overhead. Did the $275 alternator include labor to install it?

This is at one of the major chain type auto parts stores in Cincinnati, PM me if you need more info.
Hopefully the prices shown to you surely included labor.
You can get addresses of other auto parts stores at their websites. I used the 45201 Cincinnati , Ohio zip code.

Re: 93 bravada starter problems ?

actually the battery he got at sams club $47, don't know the specs but the guy at sams (per my son) said its the one listed for the car, the alt,$20 to check the system,$56 labor, $89 alt plus tax, shop supplies etc,etc total $199. still has inter. no start-clicking- 2nd diagnosis starter "going" out $275 installed 2-3 hours to do. Is this correct time for labor???

The time seems about right, On your Bravada you have to remove the cross member to get the starter out. R&R instructions here: http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBr...3d8012a5e6.jsp None of the charges seem unusualy high for a shop but you could have saved a lot by doing it yourself.

As far as finding a shop, go to cartalk.com. they have a list of mechanics that have been recomended by listeners to the show in most areas of the country.

Re: 93 bravada starter problems ?

Chris, Eric thanks for the info.I guess they are charging by flat rate.I know it only took about 20 min to replace the alt and the labor was $56 plus $20 to check electrical sys.Like I said before it kills me to have to pay that when I could have done it myself and I realy don't have the extra $$$ to put out for the repairs.
