Possible Fan Problems

1995 2.3 GRAND AM when starting the car runs fine about 5-10 seconds later check engine light will come on and the fan will start also seems to lag engine alittle. any idea's where to start , the fan relay evidently is working I guess it seems to kick the fan on, how many sensor are temp related and where are they located on this engine. there is one firewall side of t-stat housing would this be the bandit ??? Thanks, could it be a/c related most fans will start when a/c circuit is energized this one don't , the fan just comes on before engine gets chance to heat up ??
