97 lumina won't start unless wiggle the key
I've got a 97' lumina that periodically won't start unless I wiggle the key around. I suspect ignition switch. The car has the VATS (chipped key).
Questions: Can the switch be replaced and reuse the same key/cylinder? Can this be done without removing the steering wheel, or messing with the airbag? Thanks FM |

Check this link.http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker...3d800edecd.jsp The chip in the key must be matched to old one, check the resistance in the original key and have that chip installed in the new keys provided with the ign key cyl.

Re: 97 lumina won't start unless wiggle the key
Examine your key and compare it to a spare or one that hasn't been used as much. I think you will find that the contacts on the key are worn down just enough to cause intermittent starting. Using a soldering iron, I added just a thin layer of solder to both contacts of my key and the problem was solved.

Re: 97 lumina won't start unless wiggle the key
If the SECURITY lamp flashes while you're attempting to start the engine, the VATS system is not recognizing the key. You can try cleaning the contacts in the ignition lock cylinder with alcohol and a swab. The other common problem is that the wires to the key contacts begin to fail from years of flexing.
