Crank Walk symptoms? Do the 1.8's do it?
Just wandering what the normal symptoms of the dreaded crank walk are, and how much crankshaft end play is normal on my 1.8L.
And is the crank walk problem an issue on the 1.8's also?

Crank walk symptoms have been covered many times. If you do a simple search with the keyword Crankwalk, or CW I'm sure you will find lots of info. Crankwalk can happen in any car. The only dsms that have a big crankwalk problem is the 1992.5 - 1999 turboed dsms. These are the dsms with the 4g63T motor in them. These motors are also refered to as the 7 bolt motors. I have never heard of the 1.8L engines having problems with crankwalk but, to be certain look up the symptoms and compare to your problems. I know 2 of the biggest tell tail signs are the clutch pedal getting stuck in when making left turns and a horrible grindinding/shaving noise when at idle. Like I said I have never heard of the 1.8L having crankwalk problems though.

A haynes manual should be able to tell you crank endplay... you should have one anyway...

I did a search for it and only got a couple of hits from the DSM section, and none of them talked about the 1.8L
Anyways, I am sure that it needs some attention. I checked a manual down at Checker, and it said .006"-.012" and mine is waaaaaay looser than that. It would seem that I can move the crank back and forth around 1/4"!!!, and the rear main seal is puking badly all of the sudden. I called a friend of mine who is an ex-Mitsu tech, and he said that the thrust surfaces on the main bearings tend to go away on the manual trans cars, especially with female drivers who tend to rest their foot on the clutch pedal. I just checked all the old service records that the old owner gave me, and the car has had 3 clutches in 145k! I would say that she was a clutch rider! I'll be dropping the pan next week to see if I can get away with rolling some bearings in, or if it's time to pull it out. I'll let you know what happens.....

ANY motor can have thrust bearing failure.

Wow... you are officially the first person to CW a non 7 bolt 4g63 that I have ever heard of. That sucks man, but a new set of bearings isnt probably going to fix it. I think you better start looking for a new motor.
