Re: 88 hatchback std 4spd to 5sp swap

It can be done and its easy but even with an Si tranny, your D15B1 still wont be going anywhere. Id just stick with the stock tranny for gas mileage purposes and dont waste your money on a si trans unless you plan on swapping in a better motor. I say forget D-series altogether and purchase a B-series package, motor and trans.

Re: 88 hatchback std 4spd to 5sp swap

i'd do it for the extra gear...but only if you already have the tranny...

can get an a6 swap for cheap...find someone with an SI that's done or in the process of doing a swap

Re: 88 hatchback std 4spd to 5sp swap

one of the things you will have to watch out for is in the 88 model there is a spline missing on the the cv joints. the cv joints in models 90-91 have 23 splines and the cv joints for the 88-89 model have only 22. the tranny itself is also missing one off of the input shaft. Everything else is going to bolt right up even the starter.

And who told you this? 88-91 dx/si axles are exactly the same and they both have 25 splines (trust me, ive counted many times). The 88-91 HF/ STD axles have smaller ends but have thicker shafts and only have 23 splines. Ive tried shoving both axles into different trannies and i know which is which. There is no distinction between 88-89 and 90-91. In fact, i have an 89 si/dx axle in my 91 crx si as we speak. Check the part number at autozone if your not sure. I think your mistaking axle splines for clutch splines.

I agree..the advice on this site is great, but some things you have to just try and see where it gets you....I've checked the part numbers myself and the only thing that seems to not match up thru the fourth gens is the clutch components. I've heard the steering knuckles and steering components were change in 90' to but am unsure about that..the hf shafts are definately smaller though...lol I've never seen an std model but I'm sure glad i don't own one they must take forever to get up to speed with that little throttle body motor
