Good Deal or Not?

I'm looking for some opinions about a '94 Maxima...I'm in the market for a 2nd car...I've come accross a 94 Maxima with about 230,000 miles on it...body is almost perfect, interior looks great, newer tires, appears to be cosmetically well maintained...however...the engine misses...and the tranny slips...owner suspects it has a burnt valve..said he replaced the injector on the cylinder in question...but now that cylinder is losing compression...the tranny slips a little into 3rd..and has lost overdrive. I've owned a couple of Maxima's in my lifetime and love the way they drive and handle...I don't mind spending a little of money on this car...but don't want to get in over my head...I can buy this car for $500.00 in it's current condition...how much should I anticipate in putting in it?

Re: Good Deal or Not?

Add replacement tranny&engine price ... With that mileage spare prices will be steeper if/when all is repaired.

Re: Good Deal or Not?

Maximas are good cars, but I wouldn't consider buying that one unless I was planning on putting in a new engine and tranny. If the body and interior are as good as you say they are then it would be worth it. With the new engine and tranny at least you will know you can go for a long LONG time without worrying about them. The car will be good for another 250000 miles at least. If the body has rust and the interior is starting to go then stay away from it. You dont want to soak money into something that looks like crap.

Also you should consider other parts on the car. What has the previous owner replaced and what will you have to replace in the near future.

You have to look at it from all angles. But if your willing to fork out the cash to put the new parts in your going to have a great car that you can trust!

Re: Good Deal or Not?

I'd be wary about that one. You're buying a 12 year old that you are going to have to dump about fifteen hundred bucks into just to get running right. Vehicles that old have a lot of other problems that if are not present now, sure will be soon.
