2001 front end noise?
just purchased a 2001 limited as a d.d.....growling front end .
just replaced passenger side hub and still have some grumbling...going to change the drivers side hub when i get a few xtra bucks. what else could be making this? checked driveline,joints.etc.. and shouldn't the axle joints rotate when parked? or is this different from the older lock out hubs that i am used to...seems as though i should be able to rotate them... anyone else have this problem b-fore... or should i xpect some noise with this "uni body type"vehicle? thanks |

Re: 2001 front end noise?
The unit body is pretty solid, the interior and dash tend to rattle though.
You don't say why you replaced pass side hub. Is that expensive? Also did you try to rotate the axle when parked? No, they will not turn when on the ground. If you jack it they will rotate with the wheel and hub (on the 01 anyway). The transfer case is where the 4x4 connection is made (on the command-trac). I have 2 XJs 97 and 01 the hub don't seem to go out. The 97 has 132K miles on it. |

just replaced the one on my 99 150 as well(almost 300 freakin dollars for that one...with my labor) it just seems as though if the connection is at the transfer case andcase is in 2wheel drive the driveline should "freewheel" and spin by hand on the ground or in the air by rotating the axle u-joints (just like my old bronco's)...have done plenty of wrenching but just not on this make /model do you know which transfer case model is the "command trac"? and it seems as though all uni-body vehicles have a little more road noise than those with a true frame.....maybe i should just turn the radio a little louder

Re: 2001 front end noise?
IF you are still getting a growling noise, then check the DS for play (weight off wheel) I have had to do this to my 00 XJ, I HIGHLY recommend getting the TIMKIN brand bearing, you'll pay a little more, but you will be done with it the first time. DO NOT BUY the Advance Auto brand bearing, went through 2 sets before I got a good pair!
As far as your U-joints movement, you will ONLY be able to move the jiont if the tires are off the ground! Unlike the older model XJ's, everything is "BOLTED" together upto the T-case.( Axles to hub assembly, through ring and pinion, to front driveshaft) T-case is what engages the entire front axle assembly. ITs just sitting there spinning as one big assembly till the connection is made in the T-case to give you 4 wheel drive. |

Re: 2001 front end noise?
Also, check your tires, are they starting to "feather on the edges of the outer tread, if so, this will cause your "growling noise too. Try rotating them to the back, na dsee what happens.

i tried for the endplay with wheels off the ground and was not able to get any...after i removed the pass. side hub is when i could see the play in the unit... the zone was going to give me a "china" brand of bearing but i asked for the better hub which is a national...we use a lot of them at work.and they are o.k. thanks for clearing up the t-case to front axle...with that said it could even be an t case out put bearing...i'm going t mremove the prop shaft and se if it is still there.. thanks for your help |

Re: 2001 front end noise?
ALso try this. Get your Xj up on jack stands (4) engage the 4 wd, put the tranny in gear and listen for your growling noise. If your careful enough you can use a 3/8 or 1/2" LONG extension placed on the axle near the hub and listen to each hub to see if one is making more niose than the other. ( almost like a stethascope) Agian , check your tires, they have been known to be the culprit many times for front end noise. Good luck
