1999 Amigo fuel level sending unit code P1627

I just purchased a used Amigo 2.2 liter 4cyl with 97k miles with a bad engine and completed an engine swap. Prior to the swap and after, the fuel gauge acted very eradic. I've noted several posts on this site mentioned the fuel level sending unit probably being the issue and that the '98 - '00????? Rodeo "sending unit only" could be purchased for about $40 instead of the complete pump/sending unit assembly.

I took the pump/sending unit out and tightened the copper fingers to ensure good contact on the resister board. I plugged the unit back in and worked it by hand and it registered fine on the gauge.

Then, a strange thing started happening . The fuel gauge would work fine until the cooling fan kicked on. Everytime the fan kicks on, the gauge goes back to it's erradic behavior and won't correct itself until the engine is killed and re-started.

I also pulled codes this morning and had P1627 code (PCM analog/Digit Conversion Error). I read another post indicating these may be linked????? The code comes back every time you kill and re-engage power.

It sounds like I need to replace the sending unit but the fact the gauge works fine until the electric cooling fan kicks on really baffles me.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated! This is the first Isuzu I've ever owned and I'm starting to wonder if this was a good idea.........

I solved my problem. Once I installed a new sending unit, the P1627 code reset and didn't come back. Also the CEL stayed off and the cooling fan now works correct.

One note that other Amigo owners may need to be aware of. I purchased fuel sending unit (SU) P/N 8-25232-011-0 direct from a dealer here in Dallas. The wiring leads going from the float arm/sending unit were too short to plug into the assembly at the top. I had to disassemly the SU's and use the old wiring harness and resistor board with the new float arm and finger assembly. Seems to work fine but a shame that a Isuzu can't get a $60 part right.

well maybe it's not so much isuzu as the parts guy. i doubt that you got the right part, considering the extensive modifications you had to do.

in my experience, isuzu parts listings/illustrations are not the easiest to follow. model, year, and updated substitutions are not always clearly obvious. the parts guy has to be very knowledgeable and/or on his toes.
i've caught many an impending error by looking at the screen over their shoulders and paying special attention to notations of model-year application.

for the future, of course, make sure you bring your vin and manufacture date, and ask to see the parts illustration screen to double-check the guy. and make sure your vehicle info is on the parts invoice so if there's a problem the responsibility is clear.

or...order from merlin at st.charles isuzu and/or JLEMOND. both ought to know the little differences like this. . .


btw, $60 sounds like an error. . .i didn't think isuzu sold anything that cheap

[I stopped back by the dealer today and talked to a different parts guy and sure enough they'd sold be the wrong part. The correct p/n should've been P/N 8-25232-012-0 (vesus P/N 8-25232-011-0). But since what I'd done seemed to be working I didn't want to pull the tank again. Price was $63 plus tax....... Seemed pretty expensive for a small piece of plastic and copper wire..........]

I talked the dealer down on the parts price for mine. They wanted $58. I told them I could get it for $35 from st. charles with free shipping. They dropped the price to $40 so I took it since they had it in stock.

gives you an idea of just how high their markup is. . .
that's a 31% price drop.

was that a real price from st charles? 'cause their $35 price is more than double their regular 15% discount, or was your local dealer's price jacked way up to begin with?

p1627 will not cause the cel to come on
bit of advice dont try to repair a sending unit your
spending Im sure over an hoour to remove the tank
replace the bad part
now if you are able to remove the tank work on the unit reinstall it and reinstall the fuel tank in 15 minutes like I can maybe it woulbd be worth it

Not sure what the real price was. I've seen it posted on here as either $35 or $39 that we can get them for with the discount. I just told the dealer $35 and he started dropping it. At first he said $43, but then decided to go with an even $40. Always try to argue down the price when buying from dealers although with isuzu the mark up on parts and labor costs are the only money they make in this country now.

FYI in the parts catalog it list cost....$ list....$$ and msrp....$$$$$
the dealer I work for our parts dept sells parts at list some do go for all
at msrp which is just craazy and when you do go to the parts dept. try to ask for someone who has been there a while because with isuzu parts it can be a bit diffifcult to get the correct one
for example two weeks ago I go for a Rodeo cat I am told it has to be ordered
it comes in three days later (wrong) its for a 4x4 I go to the parts manager he looks it up we have the correct part in stock and it has been there three months (go figure) I once had a parts guy order a froce motor solenoid for a trans got a whole tranny what the heck was this guy thinking
