Re: 2002 tacoma front brakes
You should be able to remove them with a good set of basic metric hand tools. No special tools required. I don't know why you are removing them but if it's for changing rotors you should be able to swing the calipers away from the rotors and tie them for support without removing the flexible brake hoses.

Re: 2002 tacoma front brakes
If you have a 4WD or a Pre Runner it isn't necessary yo remove the calipers to change brake pads. On the 2WD trucks you can remove the bottom retaining pin and swing the caliper out far enough to change the pads. I'm passing on information from the shop manual.

Re: 2002 tacoma front brakes
i have a sr5 4wd with the offroad package,i'm doing this project saturday when i have to change the oil, if you don't have to remove the calipers please enlighten me on the process, that would be awesome, i've got 102,000 on the original pads and the dealer told me they were getting kinda of thin when they did the balljoint recall, i do do alot of towing with the truck, a 450 gallon water trailer every other weekend, plus a 16' trailer of firewood frequently in the winter months, thought i'd let you know how the truck is used, it has never let me down, thanks for all your help and info, jim

Re: 2002 tacoma front brakes
Jim, In the link below the second group of photos will show the front and rear brakes. The photo will help you locate the parts referenced in the next link.
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...leedingbrakes/ This link is from a 2003 shop manual, your brakes should be the same, yours may not be ABS. Find front brake pad replacement and follow the instructions. http://www.deserted1.com/FSM/#Repair_Manual_Volume_2 With the above information the job should be easy to do. If you have to replace the rotors or resurface them the calipers would have to be removed. Hopefully the rotors are good. Good to hear your truck has been trouble free. Clifton |
