Question Sqeaky Breaks...Need Help

Hey,
I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport and I need help with some questions on the breaks...
I bought the car in June and I brought it in to have a check-up done and they replaced the break pads. Although, now that I have replaced the break pads, something is squeaking when i am driving down the road, without applying the breaks and i believe it is coming from the right rear. i took it in for them to look at it and all they said was that the breaks are going to squeak, but they have plenty of tread to stop you. i was wondering, could the queaking be fixed by an adjustment, or could it be something else besides the breaks squeaking.
Any help would be greatly appriciated

Re: Sqeaky Breaks...Need Help

Are the brakes squeaking, or are they grinding? If grinding, take it back to them. If it's a metallic squeak, something could be out of adjustment, or they could have put something back together wrong.

But...squeaking/squealing is a common thing to occur in new brakes. You might want to try driving 55+mph, then heavily apply the brakes to stop as quickly as you can. This sometimes will get things "broken in" (although there's really not a break in period for brakes) and remove the squeak.

Also the guys that told you that brakes squeak are complete morons they are not supposed to squeak until the pads are getting worn down and definately not when they're not being used. It should have drum brakes in the rear and if they replaced them pull off the wheel and brake drum on the side that is suspected and make sure that the shoes weren't put in wrong which could very well cause the noise you're hearing.

Just a quick comment... adjustment wouldn't be the case here if it's from the rear end, as these are drum brakes... drum brakes have built in adjusters that will automatically adjust the brakes after starting/stopping a few times. Reason being is to match rear stopping power with front, as your front and back brakes are run from two seperate "tanks" in the master cylinder and could have slightly different pressures.... I would pop the drums off and clean them real good with some good brake cleaner.. could be dust build up from the new pads.....

Re: Sqeaky Breaks...Need Help

Ok , you siad that they replaced the brake PADS!? That would mean that they only replaced the front PADS and SHOULD have TURNED the ROTORs! IF they replaced the REAR SHOES than agian they should have TURNED the DRUMS! When you try to remove the drums they should stick a little, but slide off. If you have to REALLY hammer and pry to get them off and they did replace the rear brake shoes, than they installed the shoes wrong. Looking at the shoes ( drum off) you should see a "short" shoe on the front, with a "longer" shoe on the rear ( longer and shorter is refering to the brake material length on the metal shoe) If they are reversed, than you need to have them fix the problem, that is IF you are able to get the drum off. usually when shoes are installed wrong you have to almost beat the drum to get it to go on.
