Exclamation Helppp me someone!

Alrighty so...about a year ago me and my boyfriend bought a 97 honda civic ex...had alotta work that needed done...but we loved the car, so we started the work. About 6 months into owning the car, it blew up saddly...long story short, I paid someone thousands of dollars for parts and labor...and the guy I thought I could trust spent it on drugs. Now I'm looking towards getting my stuff running and on the road again, and I have a question. A friend of mine has a motor from a 96 honda civic dx...Would it be enterchangable with the motor I once had?

Someone please...I really need the help...Thanks!

Re: Helppp me someone!

To answer your question, yes, the engine from a '96 DX will fit in your '97 EX. However, the engine from the DX is a D15Y7 which is a non-VTEC engine and only produces about 106 horsepower. The engine that was originally in your '97 EX was a D16Y8 which is a VTEC(Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control) engine and produces about 127 HP. So if you main goal is to just have an engine that will fit into your Civic and run, the D15Y7 will be fine. But if I were you, I would try to find another D16Y8. Try looking on ebay. They are all over the place. Better yet, go for a B18C series and get anywhere from 170 HP to 200 HP. Just my opinion, but now you have the info. you need. Is the tranny(transmission) still in good shape? If so, stick with the D16Y8. If you go with the B series, you will have to swap out your tranny too. B series engines are more expensive and a tranny swap will just add more $$$. Hope this helps. Be careful who you trust to do the work this time.

Yes, the engine will work fine, it will be an exact fit to your car in fact. You may need to change the PCM (computer), or at least change the part that controls VTEC, in order for the engine to run. Btw, the code for the DX engine is D16Y7, not D15Y7.

Lightbulb Re: Helppp me someone!

thanks for the help on everything you guys...and yah i guess these people that just tried to sell us the motor, were telling me it was something it wasn't....so i'm still on the search to get my baby back on the road! you think i should look for a B18C series motor? and it would make it all the faster? sounds like something i'm interested in...now i can look on ebay...but the problem is, not alot of the people on ebay will ship to AK lol, so I guess I'll just keep the look out.

But yah, I could use all the help and advice I could get on my car...I really love it alot and I'm just learning...So any help would be awesome.

((about the tranny...
--what kind of tranny would I have to switch to for the better motor, and like how much would that cost me?))

thanks all...

Re: Helppp me someone!

You need a 5 speed manual transmission either from a Civic SI or Integra. A good running B18C costs around $3000 to $4000, add another grand for the tranny. Plus you need to upgrade the brake system to handle the extra power.

All said & done it's around a $6-7000 job, it gets you a guaranteed 180HP (maybe a little more), but it's a lot to spend.

If you can't spend a lot just swap in the DX engine or find another D16Y8 (EX) engine.
