Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

I'm still trying to decide which all terrains to put on my Wrangler. Seems the popular ones on the Jeep forum are BFG AT KOs. They are also one of the more expensive ones. Bridgestone Dueler Revos are also popular, but, again, expensive. Dayton is a division of Bridgestone/Firestone, so I'm thinking the Timberline ATs may be a quality tire without the price. How do you like them?

Re: Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

For the price I really like them. They were #1 on consumer reports a couple years ago. They do really good in snow and on the wet stuff (though I did break the back end loose a few days ago getting on the gas around a corner when the tires were wet). I've read some posts in other forums of ppl that had them and some dont like them because apparently they dont do very well in mud. I think they are ok in mud but not as good as BFG's. Also they have a 2 ply sidewall and BFGs usually have 3 ply. But for half the price you get alot more then half the tire.

I had them on my mitsu pickup too. They seem to wear good. My brother bought some for his old ranger after looking at mine and loved them. Said he's going to buy more when the tires on his new truck wear out.

I've never had a problem on the trails that I have run, and havent even air down. One thing that is kind of annoying is the tread isnt as wide as you would think. Mine are 30x9.50 but the tread width is actually 7.3. Protetypes BFGs are noticably wider (he has the P metric equivalent to 30x9.50).

I will most likely buy them again when I go to 32's. I got mine from Tires Plus. They also have an MT tire which I like the looks of and I think it has 3 ply sidewalls. Unfortunatly they dont make it in a 32" for 15" rims for some reason (only 30, 31, and 33).

Re: Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

Thanks for the feedback. I'd be looking into 31x10.5x15s, but now that I think about it, I don't know if they listed those dimensions. If I remember right, all were listed in metric values, and I didn't feel like doing the math when I was checking them out at the Dayton site. I don't have to worry too much about sidewall strength here in SWFL. Few rocks, lots of sand. Thanks again.

Edit: Must've been another tire I was looking at. The Timberlines in 31s have 8.1" tread width. Not too skinny. I'll have to check the price. I don't need to shell out $120-$130 apiece for 5 new tires on the beachmobile.

Re: Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

Yeah they do have them in 31x10.50-15 for both the AT and the MT.

Those links go to the size and spec sheet for each type. The inch ones are near/at the bottom of the tables.

Edit* Just remembered that the guy that sold me the first set for my mitsu was from florida. He said he sold tons of them there and really liked them. He's the one that recommended them to me.

Re: Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

Thanks! I was just checking them out and comparing them to the Revos and KOs. One guy on the Jeep board has the MT and likes them a lot, but I'm going to stay away from any MTs for road noise.

Re: Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

Surferfletch - not to steal the thread, but take a look at the Yokohama Geolander's AT II's. I have them on 3 trucks and they are GREAT in everything I've done - mud, sand, snow, ice, etc.

Hey, if I can get a 5,000# 4x2 truck (the Rodeo) up a STEEP slimey, slippery dock with a 4,000# 22' boat on it's rear without slipping an inch; they're good enough for me!

Yes, I have pictures to prove this - as some don't believe just how capable a 4x2 Rodeo is; just have to know how to drive it

Seriously, and also, the Yok's are a LOT cheaper then Revo's or BFG's.

I wouldn't touch another set of BFG's if you paid me, at least not on my diesel - they had horrible traction and wore out REALLY fast, not exactly in my pleasure at $155/tire. Whereas my replacements - the Yok's - were $125/tire WITH warranty/mounting/balancing.

Mind you, the $125/tire is based off from the 16" tire size; 15" tires are cheaper.

I ran that size, the 31x10.5 on my 1st Rodeo - it initially came with Goodyear Wrangler AT's (the old tread design that actually GRIPPED); when they wore out, the next 2 sets of tires, in which they don't produce any more, were similar to the discontinued Firestone AT tires that were causing issues on the Explorers a few years back. They were great tires as well.

My worst mistake on both Rodeo's was having tried a set of Goodyear Wrangler RT/S - HORRIBLE tires. But, got a good deal as both trucks needed tires at the same time - won't let that happen twice!! Can we say cha-ching $$$$!

Re: Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

Appreciate all the info! I priced 5 BFG AT KOs today. Basically a grand. Nearly $200 a tire. I'm sure I can get them online cheaper, but still more expensive than other good tires. Revos...same deal, over $900. Firestone Destination ATs...over $800. Dayton Timberline ATs...$650 mounted and balanced. Here's my issue with Yokohamas and Kumhos - nothing but American (named) tires on my American Jeep! I'll consider Geolanders for the Rodeo when the nearly new Duelers wear out. They are $27 cheaper per tire than the KOs at Tirerack.com. The Alenzas were about $180 mounted and balanced at my local shop.

I'm going to call a few more places and see what their prices are...

Re: Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

Found another shop that'll do KOs for $843. Still $$.

Re: Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

Thats why I bought them cant argue with prices like that. Sure there are better tires but not for anywhere near that kind of money and they are still a quite capable tire.

Tires Plus will also offer to do a free alignment check when they put the new tires on. Of course they charge to correct it if its off but at least you will know.

Re: Gizmo: How do you like the Daytons?

I can align the front end in the driveway. Another plus to a solid front axle! Only thing to be adjusted is toe in/out. Daytons it is.
