2005 Sonata, Noisey Lifters

Hello,

I was looking to buy a 2005 Sonata 24,000 miles. The car seemed solid, but when i went to pick it up, the Lifters were very noisey. Is this normal for a Sonata? Do I have anything to worry about?

Thanks,

CAMc

That can happen if the car has been sitting for awhile. We see it in just about every car we take off the transporter when it arrives at our dealership. The cold weather will make it worse as well. Take it for a good long test drive, for maybe a half hour or so, and the noise should subside. With 24k miles, it would still be under factory warranty if the noise doesn't go away. Which motor is this? The 2.7 or 2.4

If it's a 3.3L, then it's at least a 2006. '02-'05 were the same style, and '06 was the new redesign. No adjustment on the lifters, they are hydraulic. We don't see lifter noise out of the 3.3L as much as we did the 2.7L. The 3.3L is a really good motor and we haven't seen too many problems with them at all. Other than the couple motors we've done for Avis and Hertz. One was a Hertz customer that hit something, put a hole in the oil pan and ran it out of oil. Another was someone got the car stuck up on a curb, over-revved the hell out of it till it threw a rod out the bottom end. Other than that, haven't seen hardly any problems out of it.

Nope, the 2.7L is still a very good motor. Little bit more lifter noise out of it than the 3.3L. I traded in my wife's '03 Sonata LX in July with 94k miles on it. No engine troubles out of it at all. Developed lifter noise during cold weather startups towards the end of my ownership of it, but overall, a very good and reliable car. Noise would go away after a couple minutes. I traded it in on a '06 GMC Envoy SLT. Wife wanted more room. I didn't want the worse gas mileage. Almost kept the Sonata so she can drive it every day, and the Envoy for longer trips. She drives about 45 miles each way to work every day, so the miles tack on quick. 11k miles on the Envoy already, and its only been 4.5 months, with no long trips. If the price is right on the one you're looking at, I'd get it. Keep in mind though, 2nd owners only get a 5yr/60k mile powertrain warranty from the original purchase date, not the 10yr/100k miles like original owners get.

Thanks for all your help and insite, I think it is priced right, plus i do get the 10yr/100k because it has never been titled, it was used as a loaner/lease vehichle.

Hey John,

One more quick question and then i wont bug you any more. Would something, like slick 50, or myster oil help with noise, i like the car, i just dont want it to sound like junk when i first start it up.

Thanks again.

Re: 2005 Sonata, Noisey Lifters

I've never used the additives, so I wouldn't know if they help or not. I'd double check on the warranty for the car though. Service loaners are only supposed to be in service for 4k miles, and the warranty start date is the date is was first put into service use. Leased vehicles are originally registered to whoever leased it. If you can get me the VIN, or at least the last 6 numbers, I can tell you if it's ever been registered with Hyundai. 24k miles is really high to be sold as a new car.

Re: 2005 Sonata, Noisey Lifters

Car was retailed on 3/31/05 to Walden Leasing. Warranty start date is 4/13/05. Selling dealer Rosedale Hyundai. No open recalls. No warranty work ever done. According to this, you'll be second owner. I don't know of any companies Hyundai deals with where the powertrain warranty would transfer to the 2nd owner. I asked my service manager if he knew of any and gave him this info. He said he get's a lot cars through here with Walden Leasing being the original owner, and none of them have the 100k mile powertrain, they are all 2nd owner.

The dealer you are going through could possibly be throwing in an aftermarket warranty on it to bring it up to the 100k mile powertrain, so I'd look into that. Usually the coverages on the aftermarket warranties aren't as good as the one from Hyundai. Just depends on the company. Some also have deductibles, where Hyundai's doesn't. I'd do some more investigating if I were you, and make sure your dealer puts it in writing that it has a 100k mile powertrain, that way if at 80k miles, your transmission goes out, they will have to pay for it.

You will get the factory 5yr/60k mile bumper to bumper and powertrain warranty. The 10yr/100k mile warranty won't be through Hyundai. 2nd owners can't buy a warranty through Hyundai, it would have to be an aftermarket warranty. There really isn't anything they can give you, other than something in their own writing stating that they are giving you the 100k mile powertrain warranty. Hyundai wouldn't provide you with anything because it wouldn't be through them. I can fax you the papers that show the warranty start date if you want to use them.
