So what is going to get me here...

Ok this will be my first huge build up car on my own. Got me a 89 Mustang LX. 5 speed. I would like to know what would be a good engine to put in it to give me about 550-700 horsepower but not have to switch out everything and its mom. I will be replacing just about everything tranny will go as well. Not sure to keep my engine now get a new onethe same or get a 351. A little help please guys thanks in advance.

Give a couple of hours and I will come up with some figures.

Also street legal or track only?

Im going to be making it street legal. Emissions are out of Ohio so I figure i might get a bit more hp cause of that.

Re: So what is going to get me here...

I couldn't find anything on Ohio Vehicle Emission standard so we are going to stay with the EFI engine, which is going to cost more than a carbureted engine of comparable output.
This about the first half of the list or so I need you to tell me what you would to do with this car before I get into the heads, cams, suspension.

Engine
Ford Cobra Racing – 302/5.0L 370hp EFI – $6,780.00

Transmission
D&D Performance – Tremec T56 w/ Mustang LX 302 Adapter – K1 – $2700.00

D&D Performance – Aluminum Drive Shaft – D11– $500.00

or

D&D Performance – Dodge Viper T-56 w/ Mustang LX 302 Adapter – K – $3700.00
D&D Performance – Aluminum Drive Shaft – D11– $500.00

Fuel System
Holley - Commander 950 Multi–Point Power 50/lb 670-800hp – 84107001 –
$2,450.00
Holley – Mechanical Fuel Pump 80GPH – 12-833 – $60.00
Holley – Inline Safety Valve – 10-10038 -– $60.00

Exhaust(You will need an exhaust shop to fabricate pipping from the headers to the cats do to the differences between transmissions.)
Hooker – Street Legal Header – 6128HKR – $300.00

Hooker – Power Steering Mounting Bracket – 10961HKR – $25.00
Borla – Cat Back Exhaust – #14363 or #14139 – $625.00
Fabrication – $800.00
Installation – $250.00

Electrical
PowerMaster – Alternator 140 AMP – 837140– $260.00
MSD Ignition – Digital-6 Plus Ignition Control – 6520 – $375.00
MSD Ignition - MSD Blaster 2 Coil – 8203 – $40.00
PCM Tunning – No fucking clue

Induction
Vortech – V-2 Supercharge w/ Aftercooler – V4FA218-048SQ – $2,850.00
Granatelli – Mass Air Flow Sensor 24/lb(will need to be calibrated for larger fuel injectors) – 75935024-00 – $225
Granatelli – Cold Air Intake w/ Wet Cotton Filter – 410032 – $120.00
Poweraid – Throttle Body Spacer – 400-256 – $88.00
Edelbrock – Nitrous EFI System (80hp) – 70400 – $625.00
Edelbrock – Nitrous Upgrade Kit (150hp) – 70401 – $260.00

I would like to see you with a Whipple Supercharger because it is a thousand times better but you would have to go with a Universal Kit and I am not sure of your capabilities of installing it.

With Viper Transmission: $19,393.00
With Viper Transmission: $20,393.00

I know that is more than you have saved up at the moment and the suspension, cams and heads will run about $3,500 - 5,000.

But that is a really great package and you could remove some things but not many because most of them build on top of each other. Ebay will probably save you about 5k or so and you might feel more comfortable going with a different brand that might cost less. So far I have just listed what I personally would do.

Re: So what is going to get me here...

You are looking at about 580hp - 600hp... I think (will run figures later)...That is without an upgraded set of cams, heads, intake runners. Those are good numbers for a street legal engine.

What are their laws on swapping a pre-1994 factory fuel injected engine with a carbed engine?

Re: So what is going to get me here...

Yeah i know that i what im talking about we dont have e check so i dont have to take emissions and my check engine light can be on. I planned on the whole cam swap, heads, and block. Intake manifold and intake kit of course, new throttle body. Im sure we could do the 94 switch out but mine is fuel injected as it is.

Re: So what is going to get me here...

Im sure as long as you dont get pulled over i guess. When I did have to do emissions they never looked under the hood or anything. Checked my door jam, made sure i had catalys, and that my check engine light was not on. Then they did the gas test. So I dont know i would guess you could with no problems.

Well the engine I listed comes with a new block, throttle body, and I listed the Granatelli Intake. The cams, heads, intake runners are all upgraded on the engine I listed but with a better setup your looking at an additonal 80hp or so.
