Advantages of BS removal?

I've already searched this topic but didn't find what I was looking for.

Anyways, Its time for me to do the timing belt change. And of course I was going to change the BS belt along with it. Then I got to thinking about doing the BS removal. I figure its one less thing to break and may free up a couple horses from reduction of parasitic loss? Anyways, heres the questions:

a. Is it worth it?

b. Is it difficult?

c. Will there be any performance gains?

d. Do you really need the BS and belt?

e. What the hell does the balance shaft do?

f. Is there a posibility that by not having the BS, that something will screw up?

Thats alot of question. Thanks for your help.

Re: Advantages of BS removal?

a. Yes
b. Depends on how mechanically inclined you are.
c. Not really... Better at higher RPMs I think.
d. No, you don't really need it. They put them in to make things smoother on the stock setup.
e. You really have to ask?... lol
f. No, as long as you put the elimination kit in properly and see to it that you have the one stub with the oil groove in it.

I'm removing mine. lol (As if that will actually perswade you to remove it. lol)

Re: Advantages of BS removal?

Thanks for the info. Im probably going to do it too. But really what does the balance shaft do, I kinda know but not completly. Also the elimination kit should work with the 4G64 right?

I believe how it actually functions is that it is weighted funny so that as they spin they actually balance out the motor to cut down on vibrations... As far as the kits working in the 4g64, I don't know... I don't see too many people with the 4g64 motor, but I would assume its pretty close to the same balance shafts.

Re: Advantages of BS removal?

I know alot of people eliminate them because they can do bad things if they fail in the motor. In the motor I had in the car when I bought it one of the shafts failed(bearings) And it caused a chain reaction that destroyed the oil pump which did alot of other bad things.

www.slowboyracing.com

Yes do it, I cannot tell a difference between a car with and without them (performance and vibration wise), but they are less hassle. I am 98% sure the 4g63 bs removal kit works fine in a 4g64.

Re: Advantages of BS removal?

Yeah I am planning on doing it here pretty soon as well....if your balance shaft fails there is a good possibility of it killing your timing belt as well....and as we all know....that is not cool....as far as performance...it will add a little bit....you may notice it...you may not....just depends on how sensitive you are to the way your car feels....

Re: Advantages of BS removal?

It is very well worth it, but I'm not sure I have the motivation to attempt it with the motor in the car. But it can be done.

More specifics on the shafts' function, they create vibration that cancels out the naturally vibration of the motor. So by removing the shafts, no more vibration is made, but more is felt. They do not have anything to do with balancing the rotating assembly, which is a whole different process.
