Oiling problem

I am hoping someone can help:

I was driving down the interstate, and the oil light came on and the engine made noises, tried to die.

I use my noggin and figure the oil pump went out on me. (makes sense, right?)
Well, everything went well, and I replaced the oil pump. I start it up, and it sings like a sewing machine. AWESOME! (I thought)

I decide to go put gas in it, and halfway there, it does the same thing. I go home and drain the oil to look for debris....nothing. I go to change the filter, and it is DRY!!!! It has been on the car for 6 months!

I can start the car, and it will idle fine for a long long time, but if I drive it a mile or two, this happens......any ideas???

wow, uh... maybe something is blocking the filter? idk never heard of something like that.

I actually thought of that, but it seems to be circulating through the engine at idle. It is DEFINATELY never going through the filter. Is that possible?

Open the oil cap when at idle and see if oil is spitting out and if you hear a whirring noise. If you hear and see the oil then you know it is circulating. As for the filter...try sticking your finger in the oil filter hole and see if anything is blocking oil flow, slap on a new filter and run it. Good luck

it has to go into the oil filter. it can bypass the filter element in the filter if it gets clogged and the pressure rises enough. here's an idea change u'r filter and oil every 3 months like u'r supposed to. if u really wanna know if u'r getting oil to the filter, take it off and crank the car over w/ the injectors unplugged for about 3-5 sec. be ready to clean up a mess of oil, but atleast u'll know the oil pump is working and the port to the filter is not plugged. next put the filter back on and take the valve cover off and do it again for 3-5 sec. this time watch the oil passage in the center of the intake side of the head u should see oil come up there. if u do then u'r good, if not u have a clog after the filter. none the less change the oil and filter every 3k miles of 3 months whichever comes FIRST.

Yea, do what Honda luvr said, its the easiest way to check and see if your getting flow. What oil have you been running? I have seen a bunch of motors that have run Pennzoil and they are all gummed up bad and it will eventually clog up the passages.

i don't know about u guyz, but I always put a lil oil in my filter and on the o-ring before I put it on the block. yeah it spills a lil but at least the filter isn't running dry. If anything pull the filter, put some oil in it and slap it back on. Not exactly the best solution but sometimes u gotta do what u gotta do. U might need an extra qt of oil IF u do this

It really doesn't do too much good to put oil in these filters before you put them on because of how small they are, but I completely agree with putting some oil on the gasket on it before you install the new one. But putting oil in it first don't really help, they mainly do that on Diesel's because of how big the filter is, thats one reason why Diesel's oil filters are mounted vertical instead of horizontal.

The main thing he wants to check is popping the valve cover off and see if he is getting oil up there, because if not, there is a big probelm somewhere.
