only when its in 1st gear the tranny makes a winding sound, but when it shifts it stops. totally stock car.

I could think of a couple different things. First and simplist: the transmission mount is defective. This means, the mount is compressed, soaked in oil, broken, missing, or, all of the above

The other thing is: the front plantary thrust (pocket) bearing is defective in the transmission.

If he mount is ok. Then....

But a plugged transmission filter can sure make some noises itself.
