Transmission codes for Pontiac

Hello, I'm new here and not sure if this question has been posted. Sorry of I'm posting a duplicate.
I'm not real car literate, but by joining I'm hoping to improve my car 'talk' and learn more.
Right now, I was wondering what a transmission code is beause I took my car to a shop to have it put on the machine where they can see if it needs any fixing before I renew my plates...and the people there said they couldn't get a good reading because my car has a transmission code. Is that something where I have to take it back to the dealers to find out what needs to be done with it as far as maintance?
Thanks! Dorth

Welcome to AF, second try not to use that orange font, too bright. 3rd get the exact code and post back, your description of the "can't get a good reading" is vague and technically not accurate ( not you fault here).

Thanks. I'll take it back to that shop and get the exact code.
