95-98 engine swap

Picked up a 98 Neon for a song because the owner thought the 95 engine that he had put in was frozen and did not want to mess with it anymore. Turned out it was just the bolts he used for the flex-plate were too long and binding on the bearing journal. My problem is that I have never been able to get the engine to run smoothly especially at idle. It surges a little after it warms up. I've done all the basic tune up stuff which helped a little. The only code I get is a bad O2 sensor and that is just recently. All electrical connections to the engine were verified. Is the 98 PCM compatible with the 95 engine or do I need to look elsewhere (like the EGR valve)?

Re: 95-98 engine swap

your surging problem could be do to a bad tps sensor or map or iat sensor or the other sensor that sits next to the tps (the one with the plunger on it) on the throttle body
putting a 95 neon engine will require allittle work as you will have to do alot of rewiring. since the pcm connetors are different the 95 have a unique connector

Re: 95-98 engine swap

As I understand it, the 95 is already in there but not running smoothly. The 95's require a 95 PCM, 96's require a 96 PCM, and 97-99's can interchange. You want to make sure its a DOHC or SOHC PCM, as they differ also.
