3000GT premium or regular?

I have heard so many different things it is crazy. My newish/oldish 3000GT is a 92 and uses premium. Although I have heard that 2nd generation 3Ss use regular unless it is a TT. This is also what fueleconomy.com says. So which is it? Do all 3Ss use premium or only 91-93 and all TT models? Oh and the legal process with my car has started, it looks like th Vallco station might have to pay for the car to be entirely fixed. This actually happened to my dad's friend and the station bought him a brand new Corvette, I know this becuase he drove it to my house when my dad dropped it off. thanks for the help.

Premium. I have a '94 SL and have to use premium.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Re: 3000GT premium or regular?

The SOHC cars used regular (I think the compression ratio was 8.9)
The DOHC use premium (I think the compression ratio was 10)
The TT use premium (FI so quoting the compression ratio is a little pointless).

The point of using a higher octane fuel is to prevent detonation but our cars have knock sensors which can reduce the timing, but it reduces the performance and can reduce the smoothness of the engine since it was designed for the higher octane.

Re: 3000GT premium or regular?

ok i have a little problem with this..... see gas stations around my house are picky most have 93 octane and not 91 like the manual says and its alot more then 91 - i always use premium though- either 91 or 93 , is that bad?> i usually have to travel a little to get the 91 at a less price and thats what the manual says.... but if i sometimes use 91 and sometiems 93 is that bad??? its a 91 DOHC SL ... thanks

Re: 3000GT premium or regular?

no, its not bad to use a higher octane than what the manual says. it won't hurt your engine at all. at the very least, it will better protect you from pre-detonation, better than 91 octane would. BTW, thanks for letting us know what the manual says; i never knew what it was exactly.

its a good 5-7 cent difference here or so ive noticed...

i know this isnt going to make sense but if i put 94 in the next time and fill up.. is it going to help my car perform... and the same with race gas- ive read up on it like 10 times but it was before i got my 3k and i didnt really pay attention... thanks

Re: 3000GT premium or regular?

The higher the octane # the better (up to a limit) but yeah it will help your performance a litte... but mostly it just makes the car run super smooth ...I'd say it would make a bigger difference to forced induction cars (mostly because there is also more fuel going in along with more air.

Re: 3000GT premium or regular?

A higher octane will only help you to a degree. After that you will be wasting money and making your motor run hotter. But yes depending on if you have a high compression motor it can help. But I think more than anything its to help prevent predetonation which could throw a rod through the block....to some people that kind of ruins their day. However if you used super unleaded you shouldnt have a problem seeing as how they aren't in desperate need of high octane. But in the long run it wouldnt hurt to put in in 91-94 octane.

No no and no. You only want to run as low as octane as possible while preventing detonation. Running 100 octane will not make the car run smoother and will not increase horsepower. If you are a TT and upgrade turbos and up the boost then yes you will see a need for higher octane to help horsepower. Otherwise its a huge waste of money. Stick with 93 or 87(if SOHC) and be done with it.

Re: 3000GT premium or regular?

well, I get you man... but i was really speakin of fuel you would find at an average gas station... and for me at least regular would make my engine run rough vs. premium, comparatively speaking ... (admittedly though, i have not tried this on my 3s just on my '88 5.0 Firebird that also required premium and it made a huge difference, however on my '91 240sx there was no difference, but the KA24de is a scrappy motor)

but thanks for setting me straight.
