Moab GPS waypoints?

Anyone want to share some of their GPS routes, tracks, and waypoints?

I have the Moab Trail book at home. If you want I can post them... Are you going to GOX? I need to see if Kirk wants to borrow the two books I have - Moab and SW Colorado.

I have the 4wd Adventures - Utah book. It has a ton of waypoints. However, I figured someone probably already had them in electronic form and could save me an assload of work!

Unfortunately I will not be at GOX. I am leaving Montgomery on the 20th of September for my new home in Auburn, WA. We just happen to be taking a 3 week vacation in conjunction with our move. Moab is one of our destinations.

I am working on getting a general idae of the trails we want to take. We will be by ourselves in a stock rig, so I plan on taking it easy.

CRAP! Mapsource US R&R refuses to open the moab.mps file because it was made with Mapsource US Topo. I will see if I can screw around with it some later this evening.

Make sure you've upgraded to version 4 of Mapsource, it's free from Garmin.

I really recommend Mapsource Topo, since R&R doesn't show 4 wheel drive trails. You'll just have waypoints on a blank screen.

I have upgraded to version 4 already. I do have Delorme's Topo USA 3.0. I plan on purchasing Mapsource Topo, just haven't yet. You would be surprised just how many forest roads are on the R&R CD though.

Interesting, maybe they upgraded it.
Moab should be a big blank area though, since none of the trails there are forest service roads, or numbered.

I'm just purchased my first gps, the gps III. Anyhow, I was planning on purchasing some mapping software and was wondering which would be the best one for me to get. I am looking at both Mapsource Topo and Delorme's Topo USA 3.0. From what I've read online it seems alot of people prefer Delorme's Topo, but I've heard good about Mapsource as well. I am really looking for the one that is going to help me more off-highway. Which one shows the most forrest roads, park roads, 4x4 trails, hiking/biking trails and such? I just need to know I'm making the best decision when I plop down the $100.00. Thanks.

Jim

I have Delorme TopoUSA 3.0. It has a few drawbacks: I uses 6 CD's for the data sources. You can copy all the data to the HDD, but you still have to switch between the data sources before running the program depending on where you want to map. The problem is that it doesn't tell you which data source is which, so you have to try each until you find the one you're looking for. Also, it requires the latest DirectX libraries to run correctly. Other than that, its great. It works wonderfully on my laptop connected to my GPS as a "moving map" system while on the trail. If you want to wait until after GOX to buy, I'll be bringing my laptop (w/ the software), so you can play with it a bit before shelling out the cash.

Most of Chicken Corners and Gemini bridges is on there. Unamed Of course, but on there nonetheless. I am sure that 90% of the harder trails are NOT represented on the R&R. Gemini Brodges will likely be the most difficult trail I will be on by myself with a stock setup. I would say that Topo is much more detailed and accurate though.

you need to 2 programs that will make it easy on windows to do better than your method. get a program called DDUMP, it makes ISO images of CDs. then get a program called Damon Tools version 2.8 both are free. the latter will allow you to mount and unmount ISO images at will and they will appear as CDs to the OS. you can mount all 6 images at once if wanted to and the Delorme software supports that. if you are going to run it on Win2k, you must have service pack 2 installed!! I use this for games that require CD as I go to big netgames many times and i do not want to carry all my gaming CDs with me. it gets annoying. so if you have the disk space it is a great solution.

The software has that functionality built in. The problem is that you have to select which dataset (CD-image) you want to use before running the software, and they are not labeled with anything helpful. I was thinking about getting a map of the US and making a gif that shows which states are on which CD number, and storing that in the same directory.

Cool Synchro's setup

Kirk!
I'd really like to see your GPS setup as you describe it! I am thinking I want the same thing when I am out doing solo runs. Look forward to seeing it at GOX! I'll ask all my goofy questions in person!
