CD Player keeps resetting

I just bought a 96 Dodge Avenger on Saturday and I love it thus far (only been two days) but I seem to be having a problem with the radio. The vehicle came with an aftermarket CD player that one of the previous owners had installed. I noticed that everytime I started the car the receiver would be powered off and any CD would start again from the beginning. I took this to be just a shitty CD player so I decided to install one that I own and know to be good.

However, I am still having the same problem now. Everytime I turn my car on, the radio acts like the power has been cut. I need to turn the radio on, my radio stations are all reset, the clock is reset, and my CD starts from the beginning.

I'm wondering if anybody knows what could be the problem. I noticed when I was installing my radio that when the previous owner installed the radio instead of using the existing wiring plugs and buying a wiring connector they just cut the plug and wired it directly to the car. I believe I have all the wires connected correctly because everything still works fine when the radio is turned on, but whenever the car shuts off it is like the radio has no power whatsoever and just restarts. So can anybody help me with my problem? It's really annoying and I would like to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Re: CD Player keeps resetting

Most car radios have two lines going in hot. One is usually a red wire and provides power only when the car is turned on so you can turn off your car and not have the radio keep playing. The other is usually a yellow wire and is always hot and provides memory functions to the radio - station presets, clock, what spot the cd was at last etc. It sounds like the yellow wire is connected to a power source that shuts off when the car is shut off. You will have to find one that is always hot.

Buy a test light at an auto parts store for around $5. Connect the one side to a good ground and touch the probe to wires with the key off; when the test light illuminates, you have found the wire that is always hot.

Good luck!
