Need Help!!!!

ok my 91 gsx is having some problems, but the most serious one right now is that it wont start.

i was making a right turn and as i accelerate (going about 35mph) the car just dies completely but it still kept rolling. i pull it to the side and it wont start. its like the engine wants to turn over but it doesnt.

its sitting at a pick n save parking lot right now, i have to get it outta there before it gets towed!!!!

my friend told me the fuel pump went out, what do you guys think?

need help asap, thanx

Omar

Re: Need Help!!!!

Try and start it a few times, and then pull the plugs. If they smell like gas or are wet, your problem is probably not the fuel pump since you are getting fuel.

Re: Need Help!!!!

A car dying for no reason is almost impossible to diagnose over the net, but have you checked the common things like spark, compression, and fuel pressure?

I love optimism!

Besides the timing belt you're looking for fuel and spark. Check your battery voltage too since you might need a jump if you cranked it too much.

I can think of at least three ways to check for fuel. One is turn the key on and have someone listen by the fuel tank for an aubidle click when the fuel pump comes on. Another is to crack the bolt on the fuel filter and have someone crank it while you hold a rag over it. If gas pours into the rag your hand now smells. The other one is check the plugs after you crank it. That's the only one that doesn't require an extra person.

Test your mass airflow sensor too, it might have shit the bed. Take the timing belt cover off press on the timing belt to make sure you still have tension on the belt. Your belt could have broken or the tensioner could have failed. Perform a thorough inspection of the engine bay and you might get lucky and find something.

Also, did you hear any weird noises when the car died. Like...oh...I don't know...pistons hitting valves?

Re: Need Help!!!!

timing belt was done 8 months ago.

i will check for fuel and pressure, ecu capacitor, mass airflow sensor (somehow)

thanx yall. i'll keep you posted

Re: Need Help!!!!

i figured it out, well kinda. i looked at the battery and all the fuses that are attatched to it.

i notice that the MPI fuse(20A) is blown so i go buy a couple more, put them on there and both are blown, as soon as i try to start the engine.

what is going on??!!

Wow, this looks like a motherfucker. Well, the MPI circuit has a whole shit load of things in it. TPS, ISC, MAS(3 sensors, air flow sensor, intake air temp sensor, barometric pressure sensor), cam sensor, coolant temp sensor, o2 sensor, power steering pressure switch, detonation sensor, ignition coil, power transistor, purge control solenoid valve, fuel pressure control valve, injectors, ignition timing adjustment terminal, and finally, the fuel pump check terminal.

I think you need to get the DSM manual if you don't already have it. A multimeter too.

Alright, there are five grounding locations in the engine bay on your car. What you need to do is check each ground bolt for continuity between the bolt and the vehicle body. The first ground is located to the left of the master cylinder on the firewall. The second is to the right of the power steering fluid reservoir. The third is behind the passenger side headlight before the fuse box. The fourth is below the coolant temperature sensor near where the tranny and block join. The last one is behind the battery and above the fuel filter on the firewall.

Hopefully one of those grounds is lose. If not I think(not totally sure but I love electrical shit) you'll just have to test the grounds of every one of those sensors for continuity with the battery.

Actually, now it doesn't seems so hard.

Thanks, all you really need is some time and a DSM manual.

Although I did get one part wrong. I checked my grounds today and found that the continuity setting on the multimeter(the one that makes noise) won't beep when testing the ground screw/bolt to the vehicle body. Test them from the ground screw/bolt to the battery ground. I don't think this will be the problem though. On a car nearly as old as mine things prefer to get stuck/rusted rather then loosen themselves. But you never know when a wire might break for some reason. Then after that test the grounds for each previous sensor mentioned to the battery ground.

This is of course assuming that a bad ground is the problem. I myself have never blown any fuses on my DSM. Also, I'm not so great at DSM diagnosis.

This is just the procedure that I would go through if I suspected a bad ground was the culprit. It could be a short from one circuit to another.

ground screw/bolt to the battery ground? where the heck is that?

My post before the last one, there are five in a 1G's engine bay. The ground is where the wires attach to a bolt or screw that is attached to the vehicle body. That is the case with four of them, the other one is attached to the transmission housing.
