97 Grand Am Tranny Slip

I have a 97 GA w/ a 3.1 AT and a problem... When I manual shift it into first it will go up untill about 3500~4000 RPMs and then it will just rev like it's in neutral. Took it to a transmission mechanic and he said hes never seen it before... Great!!! I replaced the filter and put high milage fluid in there (most expensive) and it does the same thing. Going to get the fluid pressure tested(?) by the mechanic tomorrow to see if pressure drops when it does this. I am semi-mechanically inclined, but I'm just posting to see if any of you guys have already had this problem and have a solution...

Welcome to AF.

It sounds like its just the rev limiter keeping you from over reving the engine and or transmission.

No... When you hit the gas, it will pull to about 3500-4000 RPM and then the tranny will slip, like it's coming out of gear, and rev, like its in neutral, to red line (no power).
