Shiro

Ive got a line on a VLSD from a shiro 300z, with half shafts.

First n00bish question. Whats a half shaft?

Second, whats the diff between a viscous limited slip, and a regular limited slip?

And for my last question(s) can i use them in my 85? Are they worth it?

Re: Shiro

half shafts are the axles (from diff to wheel)

difference between the vlsd in the shiro and the clsd in the 87-89 turbo's is the vlsd works with fluids (hence viscous) and the clsd (clutch lsd) works on a system of... well clutches lol... anyway what that means is the vlsd allows the rear wheels to turn at slightly different speeds so it helps out cornering, but still keeps them spinning at prettymuch the same speed when going in a straight line... the clsd is more like a detroit locker, where the 2 wheels are spinning the same speed, all the time

yes you can use it in your 85, you'll probably want to drop the rear subframe to install it... and while it's out you might as well upgrade the bushings with a master polyurethane kit from msa as well as a poly rear subframe kit

msa will hook you up when it comes to poly parts.

while you're at it you might as well toss in some poly engine mounts and a poly tranny mount as well... the difference will be night and day.

Re: Shiro

Do the poly bushings and toss a set of these in and you'll out-handle most cars on the road as long as you have a halfway decent set of tires on the car.

Re: Shiro

yep... and if you're going to be throwing in the new springs/shocks in there you'll want to get a set of gary molitor's poly rear spring seats while you're at it.. they're only another $60

now depending on what sort of stiffness you're looking for in the suspension there's a number of different options out there you could go for... there's the SS springs (hard as shit to find, stock ride height, probably the best spring rate out there up until a while ago), the Suspension Techniques springs which have rates prettymuch exactly the same as the SS springs but with a 1" drop... there's also the tokico springs as stated above which give a comfy ride and handling when you need it.. depending on what year of car the drop differs (personal experiences).

however, the newest bestest thing for suspension are the springs Dan at the spec shop just came out with... if you're looking for a BONE JARRING ride, the best handling bar none without going to a coilover setup, and the perfect drop (1" in the front, stock in the rear) check these out at thespecshop.com.. he says they're still in pre-production but a friend just got a pair on his 88ss and he says they're absolutely awesome... they're about 45% stiffer than the SS springs, so you could imagine how stiff they are

however if you're going with the st's or dan's you'll need to go with a more heavy duty shock absorber, your best option is the tokico illumina's set on 4 or 5 to be able to handle those badboys...

happy modding
