99 Ranger 4X4 lights flash

Got a 1999 Ranger XTL with electronic 4 wheel drive.....
I was driving today and 4 wheel high and 4 wheel low lights on the dash flashed on and off about four times at the same time then went out...... In a little bit it did it again.... Anyone else ever have that problem and if so what the heck was it.......

Any ideas......?

have seen a couple causes - both the 4x4 shift motors and the gem modules.

Ok, what is a Gem Module..... Not really sure about that one..... I'm thinking I saw something that said the dome light & a Gem Module were both run off the same fuse..... That might have something to do with it, maybe..... I had the dome light fuse out & I bet ya can guess why..... And yes I've sprayed the switches with everything....... And I thought "Ford Had a Better Idea" BS...!

gem is general electronics module - controls power acc. like windows locks 4x4 ect.
