Strut Mount Bearings noisy - any danger?

My strut mount bearings are making knocking sounds when I corner. I know it's them because if I take the rubber caps off the strut tops and put fingers on the center metal, having someone turn the wheel produces not only the noises but a tangible knock feel.

I'm not by any stretch any sort of mechanic, can't do this myself, and was quoted around $300 to fix.

I don't have $300 right now, so my question is... how much danger (if any) am I in to drive the car this way while I save up?

The car happens to be a 96 Mazda 626 with 160k on it.
