91 Tercel 5-speed
Hi,
I'm going to look at a 91 Tercel, 5-speed, 2-door that seems like a good deal if it is in good shape (asking $500). I've never owned a Toyota before. Can anyone tell me if this particular model and year has any specific problems to watch out for? Or things to be sure and check closely? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Tom |

Re: 91 Tercel 5-speed
well with any tercel, expecialy that year, start to smoke and used and burn oil. This is because of the valve stem seals start to wear out so look out for that. And make shure the clutch is in good shape. How manny miles are on it?

Re: 91 Tercel 5-speed
I saw the car tonight. It has 163K miles on the odometer. It does smoke when first started up, so I think the VSS are bad. It is a 4-speed, not a 5-speed. The body is OK but it needs paint, the previous owner fixed any rust and primered it, but didn't get around to a real paint job. The clutch doesn't seem to be slipping, but it engages rather suddenly. The engine seems to run OK, but it doesn't idle smoothly, it seems to surge up and down between about 800-1200 rpm. I dunno what that's about. Didn't notice any oil leaks. Seats are worn, but could be covered. Needs a spare, has a doughnut on the left rear. No A/C or radio. I think I could get it for $400. Not sure what to do. Any thoughts? It has a few issues, but for $400, that's probably to be expected.

yes !
buy it with the price of gas these days . I would say it's worth it I was given a '91 tercel beater, cos the lady wanted it off her drive way.I grabbed my jumper cables and me and my wife zoomed right over & picked it up ,title and all ,it was unreal I drove away and she said It smokes alot look! I said yeah thanks ... apperently she took it to a mechanic that suggested a new motor (not nessisary )anyway heres what I ve done to it and our reward is upwards of 35 MPG.1.new valve stem seals-$24(I didn't pull the motor mount and all that)just be aware of your crank and camshaft TDC marks, that you can see from underneath if your not a big guy and (cam) when you pull the top timing cover. Man I did this under a tree on dirt(very dusty NOT recommended)2.new fuel filter -$20 3.Haynes manual -$20 VERY IMPORTANT study this for a day or two, become farmiliar. 4.magnet pen thing (very helpful when bolts are dropped ) 5.blue shop rags-$2 to stuff down into voids & spark plug holes 6.clean out /replace EGR valve on side of intake this car is almost as easy to work on as my 74 bus......almost Results: passed state emissions inspection after three tries doesn't smoke or use "as much" oil tool around all day with gas guage barely moving thats the best !that should get ya started good luck |
