GT4 Competition: Week 2

Ok so last week L-spec ran away with the drift event and on Trial Mountain 2.2 squeeked by on Infineon.

Well this week promises to be even more intense as we move along to some more challenging tracks.

This time we'll be holding the drift event on Apricot Hill. With its super long entry corner off the main straightaway, followed up by 3 sweeping turns, a hairpin and big lazy switchback, this place is primed for high speed drifts.

I'm really excited about this week's grip event. We'll be holding this on the tarmac rally course, Citta Di Aria. The city setting and narrow streets are going to provide alot of excitement as we blast through the buildings and tight turns.

-For the grip event, this week the rule will be all drivetrains allowed.
-For the drift event, only RWD cars may be used. (4WD cars with VDC will not be allowed.)
-No price limit to buy and modify cars
-No horsepower limit
-To keep anyone from gaining a big advantage, all competing cars must have their power-to-weight ratios entered as they appear in the form they are to entered in. No car may have a better power-to-weight ratio than 2.300. (The lower the number for the PTWR the better.)
-The whole name of the car as well as every modification done to it must be submitted along with the time.
-No Nitrous.
-ALL DRIVING AIDS MUST BE TURNED OFF.
-Picture proof of best time as well as the tuning screen showing all modifications is HIGHLY recommended, however it isn't necessary.
-Drift Shootout: This event is held on Apricot Hill. Same rules apply car wise except you MUST use N3 Road tires. You may submit times with multiple cars, but only your best time for each car.
-Grippin' the Ground: This event will be held on the Citta Di Aria. Same rules as above, but you MUST use R3 Medium slicks.

Not sure if I'm forgetting anything, let me know if I am.

With that said, entered timeslips should come like this:

Name of the car
Track/Time
Modifications
power-to-weight ratio
Photo Proof (if provided)

Lets get to work!

Oh wow I didn't know Galant VR4's were on here...

I'll give it a crack tonight if I get unlazy enough.

Re: GT4 Competition: Week 2

Beh.. I got lazy. I gave Apricot a couple runs. I just grip drived it again. Shitty tires don't always equal a drift IMO. Sure it aids in it, but doesn't drift. Plus, having a drifting race is kind of pointless, seeing that a drift isn't the fastest way through a corner. Sorry I didn't say it earlier.

Anywho.. it's the same old RX-7 I used before except the turbo was changed to a Stage III and the ballast was dropped to 1. I'll type them up later.

Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type A FD '02 or some shit like that.
PTWR: 2.301
HP: 553 I think
Apricot Hill: 1'29.364
Whatever the second track was: 1'30.292

You need to start searching then. You'll never know what will pop up in the used car lot.

1'30.xxx? Man, I really need to get to work...

Re: GT4 Competition: Week 2

Man I feel good about this time, took me about 20ish laps.

Mitsubishi Evo 8 MR
526HP
1'27.410
Racing Exhaust
Sports Chip
R3 Tires
Original Turbo
Racing Intercooler
Racing Brakes
Brake Controller
Racing Suspension
Custom Transmission
Triple Plate Clutch
Racing Flywheel
Carbon Driveshaft
2 Way LSD
Ballast 39
PTWR 2.301

I forgot to write down the extra stuff, so it was probally something like:
Weight Reduction Stage 3
Chassis Stiffening
Port Polish
Engine Balancing

Anyways, I think that was a pretty good bar I just set and I know I could've broken into the 1'26.xxx if I could've had a good run the whole way. Lets see who can beat it.

Check out the videos on fbidrift.com. I'm pretty sure all of their cars use the shittiest tires possible and most of them are maxed out on HP or atleast over 500. I tried their set ups and its damned near impossible for me.

The site doesn't work. Like I said, bad tires can aid in a drift, but it isn't the reason a car drifts. If you can transfer the weight, then it'll drift. Even though I haven't seen any drifts from the site, do they only use bad tires on the rear and moderate tires in the front? That would make more sense.. but does the site feature real life drifts? Me and a few others in the autocross took some cars out (Toyota Corolla, BMW 330i, RX-7 and a 240sx) at the Auto show last weekend and demonstrated a few drifts and we had a bunch of tires set out for us. We used nearly bald in the back and about 40% tread in the front and it worked fine because the steering would aid in the weight transfer and it's let us drift.

With the GT4 game engine, they used a different engine (as most would probably know) and many drifters felt it was close to being realistic, but there were a few holes in it. Comparing a game to reality is like apples to oranges though, even if it is a good driving simulator.

So far, the drift events have been a lot like the grip races we've had -- only with a twist. If you're still keen on having more drift events, maybe say that you can use any tires in any combination, as long as they don't exceed a certain tire performance (maybe Sport 2 or 3)? Besides, drifts are supposed to be the most exciting way through the corner! A bit higher perforamance in tires will eliminate my understeer at 60km/h haha. It'd definitely make the drifts a bit faster. I can still drift with the N3 tires, but they look gay and it'd only make e-braking Civics proud lol. (No offence )

Important: I'm just trying to say that just because a set up work for you, doesn't mean it'll work for everyone else. Kinda like saying you must use racing brakes, but the front has to be set at 5 and the back has to be set at 5 and you have no other choice.

I hope this adds to the competition, and not take away, because I like this competition so far. I'm not trying to complain (if it seems that way), but help build on the rules. So, I just hope you have my opinion in mind, Xeven. Thanks.

Re: GT4 Competition: Week 2

Yea I know what you mean, I know as much as much about drifting as the next enthusiast. The reason being I chose that tire is because it would force people to drift or else they'd understeer massively. We could try better tires but I feel like sooner or later people will just try to get grip the whole track to get the best time. I was looking for the feel with the drifting that you would almost have to drift every corner to get through it with a decent speed and angle because every time I've tried to grip with those tires it just pushes me straight off the track.

So I don't know, we can experiment with different tires, I just don't want it to end being where the person only drifts when they feel like it and end up gripping the whole course.

Re: GT4 Competition: Week 2

Uh oh, just noticed a loop hole in the rules. I said any car is allowed, as long as it meets the PTWR requirement. Do you guys think that race prepped cars such as JGTC, DTM, and Tuner's car be allowed? Or just production cars?

I think we should just do production cars as using race-prepped cars might a bit unfair. I just ran 2 seconds faster in a JGTC car than my previous time with my Evo.

Re: GT4 Competition: Week 2

AW Dammit!!! I was going to use one of them as a secret weapon.

But yeah, leave it as production cars for now. We can use the race cars for a later week...
